Senate cuts down-the-road pay and bennies...

Auf MIRS:
The Michigan Senate this morning approved a two-bill health care reform package that puts the health care benefits of lawmakers and other state officials on the same level as that of state employees. The chamber also approved a resolution seeking a five percent pay cut the next time the State Officers Compensation Commission meets.

Under the package, officials would get 30 percent health care coverage after four years of service upon retirement or at the age of 55.  The package would increase that coverage by six percent per year of service up to 90 percent of coverage (the current level) after officials had served 14 years.

The package covers lawmakers, the Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor General, Constitutional Court Administrator, Supreme Court justices, judges of the Court of Appeals, and circuit court, district court, probate court and Detroit recorder's court judges.

The legislation would go into effect for officials appointed or elected after January 1, 2008.  The two bills, SB 0868 and SB 0869 passed without opposition.

Also adopted this morning was SCR 0022, a resolution that would recommend that when the State Officers Compensation Commission next meets, it put in place a five percent pay cut for state lawmakers, state officers and justices of the Supreme Court.

After all the hype (4.00 / 1)
After all the hype from Republicans about how the legislative cuts passed by the House were without substance, the Senate passed an even weaker version.

The 5% pay cut passed by the House would take effect immediately.  The 5% pay cut passed by the Senate is ony a recommendation to SOCC the next time it meets (it hasn't scheduled a future meeting).

On the health insurance portion, the House version provides no lifetime healthcare to legislators while the Senate version provides 90% coverage -but only for retired senators.

The Senate cuts don't apply to any current member of the Senate, only future Senators and members of the House.

This shows how serious the Senate is about making any cuts in the state budget.  They'll vote to increase spending, they just won't support funding that increased spending.

Priceless (4.00 / 2)
Getting away with guaranteeing future cuts don't affect you? Priceless!

I love this part.... (4.00 / 2)
"However, the compensation commission isn't scheduled to meet again until 2009, meaning the earliest those officials would see pay cuts is 2011.

Michigan lawmakers are the nation's second-highest paid with annual salaries of $79,560."

As a Full-time, Professional Firefighter... (4.00 / 2)
We qualify for Medical Benefits after 20 years of service, and a full pension after 25 years, of FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT.  However, the GOP would like to cut public employee retirement benfits.  I see that the Senate meets about 90-110 days per year.  Seems to me they are still working on a pretty sweet deal.
