Drolet's Resource-Wasting Recall Petitions

by: rich

Sat Jan 19, 2008 at 08:59:53 AM EST

Recall language has been approved by judges in Wayne County and Macomb County. This means that signatures can now be gathered in an attempt to recall House Speaker Andy Dillon (D-Redford Twp.) and House members Marc Corriveau (D-Northville), Ed Gaffney (R-Grosse Pointe Farms) and Steven Bieda (D-Warren). The recall language against Bieda was approved on Thursday.

Leon Drolet, Chair of the Michigan Taxpayers Union, said that Speaker Dillon is full of "bad ideas," therefore he deserves to be recalled. Dillon's Big Bad Idea? Insisting on keeping our state government funded.

We don't know yet whether Drolet's signature gatherers will be dragging the Pink Floyd-sized pig around with them. No cool laser light show complete with fog machine is expected, if the pig does make the rounds.

As many of you know, Drolet hates taxes. The only thing he hates more than taxes are actual votes for tax increases, regardless of the necessity of the programs the taxes actually fund. His goal is lower taxes for the sake of lower taxes.

Just yesterday, it was reported in the Lansing State Journal that it's a myth that our taxes are too high and that the state spends too much money.

The report looked at state spending between fiscal year 2001 and the current fiscal year. It found that:

• State funding for universities declined by 10.5 percent.

• Revenue-sharing to local governments fell by 31 percent.

• Funding for Community Health jumped 62 percent, almost entirely because of increased Medicaid caseloads and costs.

So increased health care costs are hitting the state the same way they're hitting businesses and individuals. No word yet on whether Drolet is going to target the excessive profits of health insurance companies with proxy vote fights or shareholder lawsuits. He only has eyes for legislative recalls.

This attack the symptom, not the source, of the problem is the hallmark of a muddled intellect.

From MIRS [subscription required], Wayne County Circuit Court Judge William Giovan who approved the language on the recall petitions, wasn't totally pleased with this state of affairs.

"Sometimes you have to question why respected lawmakers who make a courageous decision in the face of calamity should be subjected to this," the judge said.

Drolet thinks they should be subjected to a recall campaign, which he has repeatedly claimed will have no additional costs to the taxpayer. Not quite true. The targeted legislators who are being subjected to Drolet's own bad idea, will have to raise funds, not just for re-election, but also to fight the recalls.

Who usually donates to elected officials? Taxpayers. By choice no doubt. But it's safe to say that taxpayers would prefer to not have to help their legislator fight off a recall. It also means the legislator will have to spend time, that could have been spent doing work for their constituents, defending the recall.

All is not lost though. Drolet's very bad idea has a very large hurdle: he and his two dozen or so signature gatherers need to collect 9000 to 10,000 signatures in each of the targeted disctricts by May 1 in order to qualify for the August ballot.

No House Speaker has ever been recalled. Drolet says, "We're ready to make history."

Let's hope he doesn't.

Pay Leon no attention. That is what he really seeks. (4.00 / 4)
Ignore him. It is a powerful tool to egomaniacs with inferiority complexes.

Make sure we support the targeted people. If money is needed, please keep us apprised.

Stay organized and fight these petitions. Challenge, challenge, challenge.

He has to May 1st.

Fightthe recall. Stop giving Leon a shred of acknowledgement.

Here's the latest one being targeted: Aldo Vagnozzi (4.00 / 2)
These people behind this are just insane. The man has less than a year until his term limit.

Here's the scoop from a letter Aldo just sent out:

"The clarity hearing for the language on the petition to recall me will be heard on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 11 a.m. in Probate Court Room 1-D before Chief Judge Pezzetti, County Clerk Ruth Johnson and County Treasurer Patrick Dohany. The address of the courthouse is 1200 North Telegraph Road, Building 12 East in Pontiac."

If the judge rules in that the petition is OK, they will be circulated in Farmington/Farmington HIlls.

More from Aldo's letter:

"This effort to recall many of us who supported these items is being sponsored by people who live outside our district and our State. It is intended to divert our minds and energy from the business of the State of Michigan."

If you can get there on that day, please do so. He needs as much support as possible. He does not deserve this, and it is a total insult to a man who has served this community for many years in several capacities.  I have known him since I was a young child growing up in the same sub he lived in, and this is just heartbreaking.

Fight the Pig! (4.00 / 2)
Rep. Vagnozzi is the kind of legislator that we need to clone and replicate in lots of red districts around the state.  He's a gentleman and a true Michigan Liberal.

Do stupid people know they are stupid?

It's a shame (4.00 / 3)
we can't have ballot initiatives to strip people of the Michigan residency...

If Leon wants to make Michigan Mississippi, why doesn't he save us all time and money and just frigging move already.

Because... (4.00 / 4)
that would be cost-effective for all involved.

Shifting populations (0.00 / 0)
Michigan's got a huge problem if it continues to lose young people to other states (and it will, most likely, because voters in Michigan keep passing foolishness and leaders in Michigan keep balancing budgets on the backs of the children and college students).

I'm stunned to read about homes 5000 square foot beautiful homes in Detroit's Boston Edison, Indian Village, and other attractive areas are selling in the $200k range.  However, it probably speaks to the shift of the baby boomers from their money spending years to their saving and get by years.  The other shoe that will be dropping is that my generation - Gen X if you will - is a lot fewer in number and won't have the capacity, even if we did keep up the spending spree typical of people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s in America, to support the kind of economic robustness seen in America's recent past thanks to the Baby Boom.

Wish I had something more positive to say ... but I'm afraid the lack of political leaders doing the right thing instead of the wrong thing (creating burdens and financial bills for young people to pay) is going to seriously impact the quality of life for Americans in the forseeable future.
