State of the State Live-Blog from the Capitol

by: LiberalLucy

Fri Jan 25, 2008 at 15:02:36 PM EST

(Less than 24 hours and counting - what do you want to hear? - promoted by LiberalLucy)

It's that time of year again. Time for all of Lansing to gather together on the floor of the State House of Representatives and hear what Governor Jennifer Granholm has to say about the state's accomplishments in 2007 and where we're headed in 2008.

Many of you joined us last year for our State of the State open thread, and it's our hope that everyone will come back next Tuesday. as apparently I'm glutton for punishment because I'll be joining the fray again as an official credentialed member of the press and live-blogging from the Capitol.

The Governor's laid out some hints at what she'll be talking about, and given the craziness that was 2007, expectations are high that anything could go.

What do you think she'll be discussing? What do you want her to address?

On the flip side -

Senate Majority Obstructionist Mike Bishop (R-Lifetime supply of hair gel) won't pass up an opportunity to face the cameras after her speech and I'm sure the yappy House Republican Leader Craig DeRoche (R-Still Irrelevant) has already started preening for his airtime.

Who will the Senate Republicans sacrifice for their official response? Last year Sen. Tom "Milk Toast" George wore the deer-in-headlights look very well, but I doubt that we'll see him again. Personally I'm hoping for Sen. Michelle McManus (R-We're not in Kansas anymore Toto) because if nothing else, it'd make for some entertaining TV, but they are unlikely to put a woman up there to follow Granholm.

You decide - take the poll below and if your candidate for the Republican Response isn't listed, add yours!

Poll
Which Republican Legislator will be offering this year's Republican response to the State of the State address?
Mike Bishop - The hair is just too cool for school
Craig DeRoche - "Ooh, ooh, pick me, pick me!"
Bruce Patterson and his dazzling moustache
Ron Jelinek - The Senate Robber Baron himself
Jud Gilbert - Who?
Roger Kahn, M.D. - What Hippocratic oath?

LL, I can feel the love for MB-R Hair Gel.

Makes me laugh every time I see it.

Happy to help (4.00 / 5)
with the snark on MichLib, especially now. I think a majority of us would like to see a return to snark and away from all this petty bs that's going on. It knocks the snarky inspiration right out of a girl...

Thank you for your comment, Doxie - it brought a smile to my face!

Amen (4.00 / 2)
Congrats and tell us about all the good things you experienced Lucy.

p.s. I really wanted to pick Craig for you, but no way is "Slick" Rick gonna give up his moment to shine.

Live-blogs are much more worthwhile, interesting and fun if there's a whole bunch of folks chiming in.

The plan is not to transcribe so much as to provide the "eyes and ears" type coverage of what's going on that you can't see from the TV. I'll also be there to answer your questions about what's going on.

It's always interesting to be a fly on the wall, because as we all saw during the Budget Crisis, there's so very much more than meets the eye!

Duty calls (4.00 / 2)
I think I'm gonna spend most of next week in preparations for the Chicago Auto Show, but I will try to check in with my witty banter as much as I can :-)

Wish I could take part again (4.00 / 1)
but I'm going to be in Chicago for our annual meeting from work.  Guess I'll miss both the SOTU (gladly!) and the SOTS (unfortunately) this year.

I'll at least be able to read the thread after the fact and feel like I actually saw it!

I can't decide! (4.00 / 1)
Their choice of Tom George last year threw such a wild card into the mix, at this point they could pick Mickey Mouse and I might not be surprised... :-D

The beauty of your snark (4.00 / 5)
is that you tend to just train your guns on the true enemy, the neo-cons.  We could use more of your brand of snark in these parts of late my dear.

Never been one to eat my own (4.00 / 6)
There's a time and place to be critical of fellow Dems/progressives, and there are some on this site and other blogs who do a very good job of that. I have tried to be that voice, but the truth is that we're not all meant to do and be everyone, and it's okay to just stick to what you're good at. I like being snarky, I think it makes reading the blogs and being informed all the more enjoyable.

Part of the fun is that the Republicans just make it so easy and nine times out of ten, they deserve what they get.

There's a fellow front-pager who has a most excellent snarky streak, and that's Rich. He's done some truly hilarious pieces that always make me laugh. I'm sure once he's settled into his new role, we can expect some more equally great pieces from him.

That being said, there's always room for some newer snarky voices, and if this thread proves anything it's that we can really use them now! Don't be shy, snark away! :-)

Schuitmaker or Hildenbrand (4.00 / 1)
They'll put a young, fresh attractive blonde face up there to respond to Granholm rather than some paunchy old man -no offense to paunchy old men other than those listed above.

Mike's a Dippity Do! (4.00 / 3)

I can't imagine that the man who desparately wants to be Governor would pass up the chance to grab the media spotlight all for himself.

I'll be down at the Capitol as well for a festive gathering, so I'll come and throw things at the press pool.  :)

Do stupid people know they are stupid?

So what are you hoping to hear? (0.00 / 0)
Speak up, and say your piece. Folks all around Lansing including some of the higher powers that be, read this blog. What do you want for Michigan in 2008?

Theme of the SotS (4.00 / 2)
Will be unity for a greater Michigan.

But then, I'll admit to already having seen the draft outline unless we change it over the weekend of course!

Dynamic times we live in.

Ha! (4.00 / 2)
Thanks for the sneak peek! :-)

But seriously - what specific types of things do folks want to hear? I'm curious to hear what she's going to say on the issue of clean energy technology and manufacturing (i.e. jobs) and how we can take that into requiring utilities to harvest XX amount of their product via renewable or green sources.

I'd also like to hear about healthcare and despite the progress that's been made, how we're going to further that progress.

I know finances will come up, and on that note I'm anxious to hear how other than Republicans want to cut taxes, how the state is helping turn the economic corner. You know, what Dubya's been unable to do...

the SotS address (4.00 / 2)
Keep us updated.

You are doing God's work, no pun intended.

Can anyone come to the show with laptop and sassy mouth in tow?

MSM will miss the forest for the trees. We need people on the ground.

And I want the GAHG reports hourly. That is Gross Amount of Hair Gel utilized for the sick in mind.

A sneak peek (4.00 / 2)
From the Detroit News:

The Democratic governor's sixth annual State of the State address on Tuesday will focus heavily on the economy, education and making life more affordable for Michigan residents. A significant portion of that plan is expected to center around her advocating the passage of bills making it easier for the Michigan State Housing Development Authority to refinance risky mortgages for troubled homeowners.
