Re-Do Basically DOA; What About Censoring Delegation?

by: TomChoske

Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 19:41:18 PM EDT

I was thinking: when we messed up the primary situation in the state, the RNC cut Michigan's delegation in half. Why don't we just cut Michigan's votes in half and still seat the delegates? We would send the full number of people, but our delegates (pledged and/or super; I'm not concerned with that at this point) but each vote would only 'count' as half a vote. The DNC already uses this system for Americans who live overseas: they hold primaries and nominate delegates (I believe around 14 or 18) who attend the convention but each of their votes counts for half, leaving a total of 9 delegates votes for the Big Count.

It would be interesting to see this plan seriously discussed.

An OK solution (minus the "supers") (0.00 / 0)
Sounds fine. As long as the "supers" aren't seated, or, in the alternative, seated as pledged delegates.

Seat the delegates-- 37 Clinton 28 Obama

It would reflect the results of the election (as far as pro-Hillary and anti-Hillary)

Personally, I like the proposal that splits the delegates 67-61, because more rank-and-file Democrats could go to Denver.

No delegates (4.00 / 2)
That should be 28 Uncommitted.  Candidates who withdrew from the election can't claim pledged delegates.  Many of the people who voted Uncommitted are now backing Hillary as their second choice after Edwards.  Phil, for example, is one of them.  I suspect MichMark is another.

I don't think you should be using (4.00 / 1)
Michigan Liberal as a measuring stick of how we should reallocate the uncommitted voters.

If there is one thing you can be certain of, ML and the blog sphere is very unrepresentative of Democrats at large.

I agree (4.00 / 1)
But we need to recognize that many people who voted Uncommitted on January 15 aren't now Obama supporters.  A lot of them were Edwards supporters or actual undecideds who are either now backing Clinton or are still undecided.  In fact recent polling in Michigan suggests that 18% of the population are still undecided.  If I recall correctly, exit polling indicated only 45% of the people voting Uncommitted on January 15 were Obama supporters.  Edwards likely would have performed better here than than was doing in other January states because of our strong labor movement.

Detroit Tiger is making the assumption in his percentages that all the Uncommitted voters now support Obama.  As we can see here even on the blog, that's not the case.

You are making (0.00 / 0)
a mistake to assume that polling of the state matches to the voters who actually voted in January.

Undecideds need not be drawn from the 45% of undecideds or Hillary's vote...it could be from the possible 1 million voters who stayed home because they knew it wouldn't count.

God, you guys are afraid of the supers, aren't you? (0.00 / 0)

Possibly (4.00 / 1)
I could accept half the delegates being seated if it based on the results of an acutal election.  If that means 37 Clinton delegates and 28 Uncommitted delegates, so be it.  However, all of Michigan's superdelegates need to be seated and there has to be a concession from the DNC on real primary reform.

No on the supers (4.00 / 1)
many of whom created this whole frigging mess.

What better way to punish Michigan than to keep the sky box and champagne set sitting home while the blue collar grass rooters get to go.

I think Michigan's supers need a time out to think about what they did.

Punishing Michigan (4.00 / 1)
I don't think the concept of punishing Michigan is going to yield productive results.  Continued infighting among Democrats only benefits Republicans.

Time out for superdelegates (4.00 / 1)
Where all of the supers culpable in this? Take someone like John Conyers for example.

I'm not (0.00 / 0)
just the idiots for Michigan (and Florida)...and if that means someone like Conyers gets caught up in sitting at home...so be it.

You should really take something for that primary fever you got...any statement you disagree with causes you to project Obama support onto the poster.

And it would make you calm down and stop troll rating people because you disagree with them...it only undermines your credibility.

I could make the case that if any one's campaign should be afraid of the supers...it is the Clinton camp. Come to think of it, I already have!

This would NEVER happen (0.00 / 0)

Obama would need to agree to the compromise.
He would, obviously, NEVER Agree to ANY compromise that would leave the "anti-Hillary" delegation "uncommitted".

Also, if you've been paying attention, it's pretty evident, and goes without saying, that any compromise agreed to by Obama, that seats MI and FL, will strip them of their "supers" and seat the "supers" as "pledged" delegates.

Delegates (4.00 / 1)
Unless there is an agreement by the end of next week to hold a new vote, the delegates to the convention will be picked next weekend.  Only Clinton will have pledged delegates.

[ Parent ]
Don't you believe it (0.00 / 0)
The Obama people are going to show up in droves and fill all the uncommitted slots...and maybe a few of the Clinton slots if the Clinton people aren't there.
