LANSING — John Ramsey plans another run for the Michigan House. Ramsey, father of slain child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, said Thursday he expects to seek a seat representing part of Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula. The Charlevoix resident lost a similar bid in the 2004 Republican primary, finishing second in a six-candidate race to eventual seat winner Rep. Kevin Elsenheimer.
But wait, there's more to this story, according to the Petoskey News Review: John Ramsey’s candidacy for the 105th district could be over before it even begins.
According to state and county records, Ramsey is not a Michigan resident — a requirement of anyone running for public office. His voting record, available at the Charlevoix County Clerk’s office, shows that Ramsey’s local driver’s license was canceled last year, subsequently voiding his residency and voter registration in Michigan.
“I didn’t realize a driver’s license dictated where you resided,” said Ramsey when told about the oversight within his own paperwork.
No, but most of us might think it a question worth asking while, you know, filing paperwork to run for the state Legislature. And, although the state's records confirm that Ramsey isn't officially a resident of Michigan, he can get it corrected in time to still meet the May filing deadline.
