Carl Levin's competition

by: Eric B.

Fri Apr 18, 2008 at 11:43:20 AM EDT

Jack Hoogendyk, from his blog, Core Principles:

Do you think your auto insurance rates are too high? Shop around! It seems that every day we hear ads on the radio and TV where insurance companies are offering lower rates on insurance. It is called the free market.

He's got a point ... a couple of years back, I used to see Tee Vee commercials telling me that despite having poor credit, no collatoral to speak of, and even during a period when I was unemployed, that I could own my own home.  And, as far as I can tell, that's worked out well for us.  Yet, somehow, I just don't see State Farm picking up the ball and going home because they were told consumers can challenge their auto insurance rates.

Below the fold, we meet Bart Baron, another Republican who's thrown his tin foil hat into the ring.

Eric B. :: Carl Levin's competition

Repeal the Clean Water and Clean Air acts until China catches up!

Let’s get off the back of the auto, oil and petro-chemical industries.  I would like to point out that one major volcanic eruption spews more particulate, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide then all the auto emissions, ever.   Major volcanic eruptions occur frequently.  Meanwhile, a far more serious and potentially greater consequence to us and to the environment is the issue safeguarding our fresh water supply.  It is not getting proper attention.

Potable water will be the gold of this century.  We must guard our Great Lakes from external and internal pressures for use and realize the incredible value of this water for future generations.

The above are not the only important environmental issues, but they indicate that we  must redirect our focus to the environmental issues that really matter.  We all breathe the same air and drink the same water. To put stringent environmental controls in place in the United States and then not demand that every other nation have the same level of environmental safety is the height of hypocrisy. The public at large, not special-interest groups must ultimately make the decisions.

If you look at the whole page, you'll see that Baron hits for the cycle -- when he advances the idea of placing a three-year moratorium on all immigration, he underlines, bold-faces, italicizes, and puts it into ALL CAPS.  Remarkable.

But, you get the feeling that when he talks about the environment, really what you get a glimpse of is a guy sitting in a corner booth, arguing with himself.

I hate agreeing with Republicans. It makes me feel skeevy.

We were AAA customers for years. In March we got our annual AAA bill--$1400 and some change for three vehicles (I have broad collision on my car because it's not paid for). Ten minutes on Progressive.com, $1100 for four vehicles.

We should be working together to ban volcanic eruptions, apparently.

No-fault newspaper law (0.00 / 0)
I don't know how you can call auto insurance the free market when state law says you have to have it. Try driving without auto insurance and see what the penalty is when you get pulled over. I think we should have a state law that says you have to subscribe to a newspaper, any newspaper. Is that the free market? I would still be in journalism if we had that law on the books.

Talk about your unfunded mandates.  The state requires you to carry auto insurance, the rates for which will not always be the same as what you are quoted, and this guy thinks that State Farm will close profitable Michigan operations because of legislation offering mediation between customers and insurers.

It's stuff like that, that makes me happy that Jacob Hoogendyk is running for the Senate.

Hoogendyk isn't really Levin's opponent.  He's really the GOP candidate for Governor in 2 years.
