Edwards endorses Obama in G.R.

by: Eric B.

Wed May 14, 2008 at 18:18:37 PM EDT

UPDATE by Hazen Pingree

From the AP

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Democrat John Edwards endorsed former rival Barack Obama on Wednesday, a move designed to help solidify support for the party's likely presidential nominee even as Hillary Rodham Clinton refuses to give up her long-shot candidacy.

The surprise endorsement came a day after Clinton defeated Obama by more than 2-to-1 in the West Virginia primary, and it helped the Obama campaign steer much of the evening news coverage away from a painful subject. The West Virginia outcome highlighted Obama's challenge in winning over "Hillary Democrats" _ white, working-class voters who also supported Edwards in significant numbers before he exited the race in late January.

Edwards made the carefully timed announcement at an Obama rally here, as the Illinois senator campaigned in a critical general election battleground state.

Watching on MSNBC (4.00 / 2)
Gonna happen any minute now.  They reported that Elizabeth "did not travel to Michigan" with John for this so my guess is those attending the GR event are in for a nice bonus part of the event.

Masterfully done Camp Obama, I must say.

In the background... (4.00 / 2)
If you looked close enough, in the background, you could see Democratic candidate for the 73rd District Bruce Hawley and his campaign manager.

On NPR and local GR radio.  If you want to listen to the speech,. WTKG 1230AM, will broadcast it live over the air and on the web at http://www.wtkg.com/pages/stre...

Wow! An amazing thing! (4.00 / 2)
Wacthing it all live on MSNBC!  Lemme tell you those souls who got in line hours ago had no idea there would be this bonus!  The O-Team:  Brilliant.

It's confirmed. (4.00 / 1)
It's all over Big Orange.

I tried to go, but when I got there at 1:00 there were already 2-3000 people in line. With my physical issues it was just a no-go. I'm really disappointed.

Bummer (4.00 / 1)
I heard the fire marshal had to stop letting people in because they'd reached arena's capacity; 12,000 or so.

Edwards is really on fire! (4.00 / 2)
Seems he's got a few items he really wants Obama to focus on for this.  He's listing all his key issues and following up with statements that Obama will be the guy to make these changes happen.  He's handing off now.  Obama's got a great set-up now.  MSNBC will come right back.  Commercial break.

Bummer.

Oh wait. (4.00 / 1)
Not a commercial break, blather from the talking heads.

Bigger bummer.

I was so bummed they started spouting their punditry (4.00 / 1)
as soon as Barack started to speak. I streamed most of his speech on CSPAN3.  This was so amazing.  Wish I could have been in GR.

Now if only Gore would endorse him...

The bestest damned endorsement ever! (4.00 / 2)

They're liveblogging, the transcript of the speech hot off the keyboard!

Wow - I wish I could've been there (4.00 / 3)
it would've been nice if they'd tipped off us Michigan Edwards people! I guess they couldn't, though.

This is a big get for Obama, especially now.

These speeches were about party unity. I hope Hillary Clinton will step out of the race. At this point, she can't get the nomination, and her "but just wait, there might be something bad about Obama out there!" subtext to her campaign now is not helpful to the party. I've been very supportive of her running, but the way things have gone down in the past few weeks, I think Clinton needs to end her campaign.

The Place Went Nuts (4.00 / 3)
When John Edwards showed up, it was pandemonium.  What a place for the endorsement: Kent County Dems have had a strong Edwards contingent since 2004.  So when he showed up, oh man it was love all over again.  That was the high point.

I was glad to be close to Obama on the floor, but Edwards too?   Just so-o-o-o exciting.

What a moment. (4.00 / 2)
One I don't think I'll ever forget.

More here.

Great Lakes, Great Times, Great Scott

That it was ... I just love the Kent County Dems and their hospitality. (4.00 / 1)
Macomb was sold out at $2300 pp ... that says it all.  Having to tell people there were no more tickets was a strange feeling ... but a good one!
