Obama Comes to Michigan

by: rich

Thu May 15, 2008 at 00:45:43 AM EDT

“There is one man who knows in his heart that it is time to create one America, not two. And that man is Barack Obama.” - John Edwards, May 14, 2008, Grand Rapids, MI

This big news, former Sen. John Edwards’ endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama for President of the United States, signals what philgoblue of WestMichiganRising said to me right after the rally: “I think the general election started in Grand Rapids today.” He’s right.

In both speeches at tonight's rally in Grand Rapids, Edwards and Obama spent significant amounts of time complimenting Hillary Clinton. They spent the rest of the time complimenting each other, with Obama vowing to make Edwards’ anti-poverty crusade a main focus of his administration. Both speeches were fiery, uplifting, and overwhelmingly positive.

rich :: Obama Comes to Michigan

What this means for Edwards, I'm not sure. It's all speculation; VP? Attorney General? Poverty Czar?

Obama clearly shifted his aim towards blue-collar workers, the ones hit hardest the past decade and a half by outsourcing. He told a story about a man he'd met in Indiana who’d worked at a factory for 20 years and then was laid off when the factory closed. The jobs were shipped overseas. This man’s father had worked in the same factory. The man felt he wasn’t just losing a job, but also a community, a way of life, and an identity. This is a story all too familiar to people in the state of Michigan.

It was my first trip to Grand Rapids. With so many things named Van Andel, Devos, and Amway, I was a bit creeped out. But then irony of the first African-American Nominee for the Democratic Party being endorsed by a Big Friend of Labor right inside the Van Andel Arena (which was packed with enthusiastic supporters) made it all better. Amway co-founder Jay Van Andel must be spinning in his grave.

Democratic Party candidate for the 2nd Congressional District Fred Johnson was in attendance. After the speeches philgoblue introduced me to him and his campaign manager Bruce Kim. Johnson was feeling emboldened by the Democrats' pick-up of an open seat in Mississippi and excited by Edwards endorsement of Obama.

Before the rally Obama attended a fundraiser in Grand Rapids. After the rally I spoke with philgoblue and two of his friends who had attended the fundraiser. They said it was a big success, with the Obama campaign raking in a lot of cash, cash that is earmarked for the general election, not the primary. Yet another sign that the general election campaign has begun.

Trivia (Some of It Useless) from Tonight

Todd Heywood of Michigan Messenger was kicked off the Press Table to make way for a member of the “Real” press. If a guy who smokes, carries a laptop and notepad, rarely pauses from typing a story, and wears a dark well-worn long coat, isn’t a journalist, then who the hell is?

Xavier Lopez-Ayala says he’ll vote for Obama but he won’t campaign for him. Personally, I would think he’d be too tired to campaign for anyone by now thanks to all the cross-country traveling he’s done for Team Hillary, classes at Aquinas College, and all the blogging he does.

Other titles I considered for this post:
Obama Comes to the House that Amway Built
My First Trip to Grand Rapids
A Night Out With philgoblue

Number of State Trooper cars I saw on I-96 on the way from Lansing to Grand Rapids: 3

Number of dead deer: 2

I did not have time to stop by the Amway Gift Shop inside the arena.

You should called it: "A Night in GR with Barack, Johnny and Phil"

I had a fun time, it was nice to hang and chat.

Glad you liked GR, sad this is your first time over, we'll have to get you back soon.  And no, no one has ever tried to sell me any Amway-Quixstar-Amway products since I've moved here (other than Dick's run for gov, and I sure as hell didn't buy that).

Lot of Fun... (4.00 / 3)
hanging out with you, Xavier, and Todd, and watching the rest of the press corps in action while two phenomenal speakers took the stage in front of us.

I'm very glad to hear (4.00 / 1)
that Xavier was able to make the event. There are probably some hard core Clinton supporters who would refuse to attend and I give Xavier credit for taking the time to be go down to the rally.

the guy in the first seat (4.00 / 1)
was an insanely fast typer.

Hillary speaks for me.

[ Parent ]
Yeah (4.00 / 1)
I looked over his shoulder. It looked like he was transcribing the speeches word for word.

[ Parent ]
I am a jealous person. (4.00 / 2)
But I am so glad you all had a good time and got so much done. He'll be back before the general? Right? RIGHT? < sad face >

As a Michigan native: To explain the deer, it's mating season so they're all kinds of frisky on the roads. I can't explain the troopers.

Return (4.00 / 2)
I think we can count on Barack returning to Michigan. It's too important for the general election.

[ Parent ]
Oh, OF COURSE he'll be back in Michigan. (4.00 / 1)
A number of times. And in W Michigan at least once more. My question is, will he get to Kalamazoo? Bush was here - twice. Kerry got to GR, and Edwards spoke outdoors in the rain on Labor Day at Kalamazoo's Bronson Park.

We want Barack in Kzoo!

[ Parent ]
Up north (4.00 / 1)
He needs to come up here somewhere. Bush came to Traverse City and Marquette but Kerry didn't make it any further north than Grand Rapids. And it hurt us up here when it came time to GOTV.

[ Parent ]
Absolutely right (4.00 / 1)
It's like I said in my "pointers" for Obama yesterday: up north, y'all get so little attention, candidates can win just by showing up! Plus, I suspect Obama will get cred not only for being a presidential candidate, but also being one of only a small handful of African-Americans ever to visit the U.P.!

"HAZEN S. PINGREE...He was the first to warn the people of the great danger threatened by powerful private corporations, and the first to awake to the great inequalities in taxation and to initiate steps for reforms. THE IDOL OF THE PEOPLE"

[ Parent ]
That's exactly right. (0.00 / 0)
Bush was endorsed by the local paper because he showed up. No other reason given.

Obama in Michigan (4.00 / 2)
I was there too...it was sooo wonderful.  I had actually heard about the Edwards endorsment before getting to the Arena (that shall not be named).  My friend Barb and I not only enjoyed the speeches by Edwards & Obama but we bought t shirts & buttons too.  BUT, when we left we stopped out on 28th St. to eat at a Bennigans where one of the wait staff told us that they had seen the speech on the local Fox TV station and that it was real annoying that the commentators or anchors for the program kept interrupting what Obama was saying by contradicting his remarks.  The wait person siad the Fox folks kept saying things like "Oh that's not true".  Can you believe it?!?  We should all contact Fox in G.R. and tell them to quit with the spin when the next President of the United States is speaking.  I'm sure they don't do that sort of thing when the current President speaks.

Better yet, (4.00 / 2)
pressure Bennigans to stop having FOX on their TVs. If I'm somewhere and FOX is on the television I try turning the channel or ask if can be turned to another station.

If I could figure out (0.00 / 0)
how to block it on our teevee we would! That and those phony religious channels.

"Kill the headlights and put it in neutral..."

[ Parent ]
I've heard that the translation of DeVos is the fox. Ever noticed the DeVos family's Fox automobile dealerships around GR? (0.00 / 0)
