Even in tight times, Michigan travel can be our best bet

by: LiberalLucy

Ah, Memorial Day weekend. That time when it feels as if Summer officially starts, up north goes to Up North (or UP North), and fishing poles, boats, and coolers get pulled out of closets and basements. Cabins, cottages, and car top carriers all get opened up and swept out. Normally I'd say that 75, 96, 127, and 131 approach creep-and-beep status, but that's changing.

This is one of the first years that I'm not heading anywhere this weekend, and many of my friends and family find themselves in similar situations. Newsweek reports that as many as 60% of Americans are planning on cutting back on vacation plans because of rising gas prices. While AAA of Michigan estimates 1.3 million of us will still travel, to some like me, it seems like the only thing going up is the price of gas.

Instead, I'm enjoying what's being coined a 'Staycation' and I'm taking it easy on a local level. While it's nice to rest, relax, and save money, I'm still feeling pretty guilty.

It's definitely not the same as heading north, breathing in the heady scent of fresh pine, seeing giant expanses of forests and fields, and eyeing the endless coastline of the Lakes. I tell myself it's okay I'm not spending twice or three times as much money for gas simply to get from here or there, but it's a small consolation. Because it still feels like nothing more than robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Tourism is one of our state's largest industries, and by opting out of heading north to save money, it's money that's not going to the very people who depend on folks like me to buy pasties at their roadside stand, eat at their restaurants, fill up my tank at their gas station, stay in their hotels/campgrounds, or buy their souvenirs (Say Ya to da UP, eh?).

That's not to mention all the sales tax that the state is losing out on that would eventually find it's way back to our schools, roads, natural resources, health care, and those lucrative Pure Michigan ads that help draw folks from other states in.

Researchers from MSU project that the number of travelers in the state will drop by 2%, but travel spending will remain flat, so while it won't be going up, it's not tapering off either. Northern Michigan will see bleaker times with travel up there expected to drop by 4%, as announced last month by the Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association.

Some things haven't changed. I've still made my killer potato salad, sun block is still applied copiously while my freckles bloom, the board games and deck of cards are brought out and opened, and while I love spending time with my family, I'm still glad I don't live with them anymore.

On the other hand, many things have changed, and it gives me cause for concern. This weekend I'll be meeting up with various family members to do our grilling and spending time at the local metro park instead of a northern cottage on the lake. Money that would have been spent this weekend on gas, lodging, ingredients for s'mores and other vacation fare is being conserved for one or two longer trips to the North, where even then, I'll be watching every penny as it leaves my hand.

For those whose very means of keeping a roof over head and food on the table for their families depend on people like me to travel and splurge, it could be a tough summer, and even tougher winter.

The good news is that based on the MLTA's findings, the State Government has appropriated a record $60 million for tourism and business promotion through the 21st Century Jobs Fund that was first mentioned in Gov. Granholm's State of the State Address. Of that, $45 million will go the extremely successful Pure Michigan campaign (voiced over by Michigan native Tim Allen), and $15 million to the state's Upper Hand business marketing promotion (featuring Chelsea resident and actor Jeff Daniels).

While it's great news, the truth is that the state can market to seven ways till Sunday, but it's ultimately up to folks like you and I to keep our travel and money in Michigan where it belongs.

Instead of Niagra Falls, consider the gorgeous Tahquamenon Falls. Got kids? Skip Disney World, check out Michigan's Adventure, Mackinac Island, or the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. I know that one of my most memorable family vacations growing up was a tour of the U.P. while we towed a rented pop-up trailer on the back of the mini-van. (Add your favorite MI destination in the comments below.)

Bush/McCain economics and recession be damned. This may be one of the leaner years of late, but like anything, if we pull together and pitch in, we can do more than just survive, we can make it and still have fun.

This might be the year for group trips (4.00 / 2)
Know anybody with a big van and a car top carrier?  Maybe it's time to get to know them better and take a joint trip someplace, split the cost of the campsite and the gas.

My favorite spot is my folks' place outside of Marquette -- low budget since I only have to buy gas, beer and some of the food.  (Pricey emotional budget, though, from time to time, getting lectured by mom or keeping my dad from doing something goofy to set off mom...)  I suspect this will be the first year in quite some time that we won't hear the whine of jetskis on our otherwise quiet waterfront.  Bonus!

One of the places I take the kids every year is Little Presque Isle park, a beautiful beach just northwest of Marquette on County Road 550.  There are also very inexpensive rustic cabins nearby for rent; I wish I could tell you more about them, but I'm afraid I've never rented one.  I can only tell you that the area makes for lovely woodland hiking and splendid remote [read: free] beach time, all within minutes of modern conveniences. (But bring lots of bug spray...)

The UP is great... (4.00 / 2)
...not only is it great, but if you're like me and detest humid, hot weather, it's much cooler than the rest of the state in the throes of summer.

One of my favorite places in the UP (besides the Falls) is Whitefish Point at the tippy-top of the UP sitting on Lake Superior. Like the rest of our state's coastline, it's a goregous spot, with plenty to see and do, including visit the famous Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, a fascinating place that is home to the memorial to the SS Edumund Fitzgerald.

I want to change the world, not help people adjust to it. - Millie Jeffrey, MI - National Women's labor and Democratic activist, Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient

Don't forget (4.00 / 3)
to take a bird book and binoculars to Whitefish Point. Some of the best birdwatching in the state.

Thanks for that pointer (4.00 / 2)
My ten-year old is a really intense birder; we're always looking for new places with new birds for him to visit.

We stopped this past year on M-77 at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge, wonderful to see a couple kinds of swans and numerous duck species we don't always see downstate.  Nice way to break up the trip, too, about half way between Marquette and the Big Mack bridge.

favorite place (4.00 / 2)
My favorite Michigan destination with lots of family memories (made all the more poignant due to my dad passing away last summer)is Crooked Lake near Petoskey.  My folks started bringing our family there back in 1964 and only stopped going in 2004.  We rented, over that course of time, at 3 different cottages and they all have their unique memories.  Now, when I'm on the road for work and if I can spare a short visit I stop and walk along the edge of Crooked Lake and I can almost see my dad sailing his boat (stored at Rydees...a wonderful boat storage and shop).  I can taste the fish freshly caught & grilled.  Remember the peaceful rasberry picking with my mom at a nearby farm. Hear the soft prayers at both the Sacramentine Monestary or the Big Cross in the Woods on Sunday mornings. Feel the sizzle on my skin of the sun at the Petoskey State Park.  Hear the laughter as we played put put golf on US 31.  And recall the ooohs & aaahs of delight as we watched fireworks at Harbor Springs.  There are so many more memories attached to that special place in Michigan.  I will always cherish that area.

Mmmmm...raspberries... (4.00 / 2)
Some of my fondest memories are of picking raspberries here in  Michigan...although the best memories are of eating them.

Aunt Ina's raspberry pie with the lattice crust - OMG.  It was like summer baked in a pie pan.  Cheap and tasty memories that last forever.
