A few fries short of a happy meal?

by: DianeS

Thu Jun 26, 2008 at 22:35:59 PM EDT

After casting a 'yea' vote on Cloture on the Motion to Proceed (Motion to Invoke Cloture on the Motion to Proceed to H.R. 6304 -- Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978) I received an email from Senator Debbie Stabenow today.  The subject:

"Filibuster-Proof Senate in 2008!"

After effectively killing the efforts of Senators Dodd and Feingold to filibuster the attempt to pass the bill giving President Bush the authority to continue his illegal wiretap program, and grant telecos retroactive immunity...Debbie Stabenow is happy to boast a 'filibuster-proof senate'?

It gets better. From the email:

"There are only four days left . . .

. . . before the end of this fundraising cycle. Democratic candidates around the country are pushing to raise as much as they can by June 30 because when they report their fundraising figures for the quarter, it will be used as a gauge of the strength of their candidacies.

Media outlets watch these numbers closely. The Republicans watch them even closer.

That's why your help today is so crucial. Never before have we had so many amazing Democratic candidates running for U.S. Senate all over the country. Because of these great candidates, we have a real chance in November to significantly increase our Democratic majority in the Senate.

It takes 60 votes in the Senate to overcome Republican filibusters of important legislation, like health care for children, ending the war in Iraq, fixing the housing market, and creating good-paying American jobs here at home. Republicans are blocking our every effort to get this country back on track. But all of that can change in November!!

But only with your help.

That's why I have set up a page on Act Blue, a federally-registered PAC that helps candidates raise money online. Since 2004, they have raised over $53 million for Democratic candidates across the country.

To help some of our top 2008 Senate candidates, visit http://www.actblue.com/page/st... and make your contribution today!"

More below the fold...

After voting to invoke cloture, she wants money?!?  I don't think so.

There no doubt will not be any criminal prosecution of any government officials, and if Bush issues any pardons before leaving office this becomes a totally closed issue.

The latest news I hear is that there will be a FISA vote on July 8th, including an up or down vote on the Dodd-Feingold amendment to strip telecom immunity from the bill.  This gives us all a chance to write/email/call our Senators(Carl Levin also voted to invoke cloture, but at least didn't send out a request for cash right after!)and ask them to please stand up for our Constitution, and support the Dodd-Feingold amendment to strip telecom immunity.

If you get any response, or a confirmation on how either intend to vote on the issue, I hope you'll post those responses here in the comments.  I'll also include my email address if you'd rather communicate that way...I know we have some rather shy readers. ;)

Also, if you choose to write a letter to Senator Stabenow, perhaps consider including one of those McDonald's coupons for a happy meal.  We wouldn't want her to be short a few fries, or heaven forfend, a chicken mcnugget on the 8th.

Peace,

Diane Sweet

Also, to those who want to speak out on this (4.00 / 6)
in a different way, send money.  Donate to those who stood strong.  Let them take a look at the numbers and see a nice big bump in the fundraising of those who didn't fold.

I'd include levin as well. do something this cycle and count this guy out. he doesn't even know his constituents exist.

While the e-mail may have lacked tact (4.00 / 1)
I have still had plenty of good experiences with her office and staff.  I know we aren't always happy with her decisions (less than Sen. Levin anyway), but when I send her a letter with my support of the Dodd-Feinsgold amendment I think I'll avoid the happy meal coupon.

Thanks for the post Diane... I've been busy and I am grateful for the updates on this whole issue :)

Someone in Stabenow's office said she opposes the bill (0.00 / 0)
I called her and Levin's DC offices to share my thoughts on FISA. Someone in her office said she does oppose it. The person in Levin's office said they weren't sure how Levin would vote, but that he shares many of my concerns.

Why they both voted to stop the filibuster, I don't know.

Great Lakes, Great Times, Great Scott

You and I both know they can tell us (4.00 / 3)
Both Senators could put up a post here at MichLib and explain their votes for cloture.

Seriously.  Was there a good reason for limiting debate?  if there was, this is a perfect place to come and explain.

Right now I have absolutely NO idea what either of our Senators will do on the Dodd-Feingold amendment, based on what they did with cloture and based on what their offices told me before the vote.

That's not the way it's supposed to be, opaque and unknowable.

Money? (0.00 / 0)
I could post details on why they voted that way, but I'm trying to avoid the scorched earth strategy for now.

Hopefully Stabenow (not sure about Levin) will reconsider after the break.... and a few thousand e-mails/phone calls.

Nothing is easier than solving a problem on the back of the poor. People who don't have lobbyists or clout.

My call to Levin and Stabenow (4.00 / 1)
When I called Stabenow's office, they answered they didn't know how she'd vote on the cloture motion.

In Levin's office they said that he'd voted against immunity on prior votes, but didn't know for sure how he'd vote on the cloture motion.

I guess we know now.

I also sent a fax to the 15 Senators that stood strong for the rule of law and thanked them for their courage.  It shouldn't take courage to do the right thing on such an obvious vote for the American people.  My, how things have changed.

on way too many issues.  I think being out of touch is a qualification for the job, at least it certainly appears to be. I didn't call, but I did send e-mails.

Levin (0.00 / 0)
According to the Levin staffer I talked to the passage of the bill is almost a foregone conclusion and so voting to support a fillibuster is a waste of time (I'm paraphrasing) but that was the gist.  He said Levin is opposed to Retroactive Immunity for the Telcos and that the bill might be stripped of that in joint committee work to iron out differences between the House and Senate bill(s) passed.  I let the guy know how disappointed I am with Dems as a whole and that I only give money to individual candidates who uphold my ideals (and then I gave him a few examples).

Ah...the old Washington shuffle! (0.00 / 0)
I was all set to stand up for your rights, but those other bastards were going to sell me out...so I did the only thing I could to protect myself because it is important Democrats continue to control Congress...

So they can keep doing this hoping the voters are too stupid to figure it all out.

They will advertise their vote against the bill when we all know the important vote was on cloture...

upholding the Constitution a 'waste of time'? (4.00 / 1)
unfreakin' believeable!

Our "liberal" Senators (4.00 / 1)
I called both Levin's and Stabenow's offices (as well as Obama's) the morning of the vote to ask their position on cloture and received the standard h**d job i.e. "I don't know the Senator's position but I'll be sure to relay your message". No doubt they will now bravely vote against the bill after failing to show up when a filibuster may have actually prevented the FISA atrocity from coming to the floor.
I saw what was coming with Stabenow after she voted to confirm Abraham as Energy Secretary mere weeks after spending a campaign telling us how he wasn't qualified for government (which she was in fact right about). This would be a good place to insert a joke about her husband's penchant for whores.
And let us not forget either that they both shored up their Knesset West credentials by voting for Lieberman's "Let's Attack Iran" amendment.
Only in America could Levin and Stabenow be embraced and defended by progressives like yourselves.

Thanks for all your efforts, everyone! (4.00 / 1)
We've still got until July 8 to try to get our elected officials to speak up and declare their intentions.

Another thought on the cloture vote, and Stabenow's praise of a 'Filibuster free Senate'...

In 1971, the Vietnam war was still dragging on.  Mike Gravel reasoned that by ending the draft, perhaps the war could be brought to an end.  He filibustered twice, and was stopped by a vote for cloture each time.

The Vietnam war continued.

That's just been weighing on my mind since the fisa cloture vote.
