It's your primary responsibility

(Amen. - promoted by rich)

With less than a week to go until yet another primary election in the state of Michigan, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land announced that she expects 1.4 million voters to turn out and cast a ballot.

With 7.4 million registered voters in our state, that means fewer than 20% are expected to make an appearance at the polls to decide who will run the state for the next two years.

Given that there is so much excitement centered around the presidential election in November, the primary is unfortunately overlooked by most voters.  Many Michigan legislative seats are determined by the winner of the primary election.  In effect, 20% of voters determine who will be elected in November to run the State House and in two years, probably fewer will turn out to see who runs the House and the Senate.

Get out the vote efforts are almost more important for the primary than for the general.  Many of the decisions that impact the day to day life of Michiganders comes from the State Legislature.

If you can spare the time, head out to your neighborhoods on August 5 and encourage your neighbors to vote in the forgotten race.

It is a shame... (4.00 / 2)
but most elections are decided by a minority of those eliglible to vote.

Let's see how this works out--if 20% of those who can vote actually do in the primary, then 10.1% of all of the potential voters will chose those who will lead us for the next several years.

In presidential elections, a 50% turnout is considered good, so 25.1% of the electorate can elect a president, except for the electoral college which can elect a president who has maybe 23% or 24% of the support of the entire country.

Sigh.  At least it is better than the alternative.

I didn't do the math, I thought it might depress me...I was right.

Did GOTV last night... (4.00 / 2)

and too many people in the Lansing area weren't even aware that there was a primary on Tuesday. I hit almost 40 houses on behalf of Ingham County Commissioner candidate Brian McGrain and so many folks told me that they didn't know about the election on Tuesday.

All across the state there are important Primary elections on Tuesday.  This is how we elect liberal, progressive candidates by VOTING in the primary.  Check out some of the progressive groups that you know and see who they are endorsing.  If you don't vote, you don't have the right to complain about the outcome.  If you truly want change and progress, you'll email or call everyone you know and remind them to VOTE on Tuesday.

Do stupid people know they are stupid?

Even if there is no primary opposition... (4.00 / 1)
show up anyway.  We like to know what our baseline is, lol.
