Liveblogging the Roll Call Vote for the Nominees

by: rich

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 18:11:11 PM EDT

Update 2: Sen. Barack Obama is the Democratic Party's nominee for President of the United States of America.

The Democratic Party formally nominated two people (bet you can't guess who!) at their convention today.

The nominating speeches for Sen. Hillary Clinton were given by the following people:

  • Dolores Huerta (CA) - Nominating Speech
  • Jordan Apollo Pazell (Utah) - Seconded the Nomination
  • Denise Williams Harris (NY) - Seconded the Nomination

The nominating speeches for Sen. Barack Obama were given by the following people:

  • Michael Wilson (Registered Republican, FL) - Nominating Speech
  • Sen. Ken Salazar (CO) - Seconded the Nomination
  • Rep. Artur Davis of (AL) - Seconded the Nomination

Roll Call vote as it is happening is below the fold. I will update it periodically. Any errors are my own.

[Hillary Clinton is on the floor, lots of clapping. She's at the microphone."Let's declare right here, right now that Barack Obama is our candidate."

Paraphrasing...I move that the convention suspends procedural rules. All votes cast will be counted. She moves that BO by acclimation be the party's nominee for the POTUS!]

The entire convetnion hall says Aye! Barack Obama is officially our party's nominee!

General Holiefield (4.00 / 5)
Hey over there in Michigan!

Aaron Silverstein here from SquareState.net in Colorado.

I am sitting one row in front of your delegation and wanted to send you this pic of Michigan Delegate, UAW VP General Holiefield cheering on your calling of the roll...

Click for Bigness, and maybe you can spot others from home.

Thanks Aaron! n/t (0.00 / 0)

Unity (4.00 / 5)
Now that's unity. Very slick and gracious of Sen. Clinton to do that.

Agreed! (4.00 / 3)
What a historic moment!  My God!  Senator Barack Obama is now the official Democratic Party Presidential Nominee!  Hot Damn!!!  Woo-hoo!  God Bless America!!

Classy (4.00 / 2)

Hey RIch and LL-- (4.00 / 3)
What exactly the heck happened with the Michigan delegation? What happened to 73-55? Where did the 129-27 come from? Got any inside scoop from the people who actually voted?

And when the motion for acclamation came up, did anyone else have visions of Hans Moleman? Ten thousand people say "Aye" and one small voice in the back says "Nay"??

Not Sure (4.00 / 3)
I'm not sure what happened, but I can tell you that during the roll call the delegate votes in states like Missouri, which were close in the primary, were landslide tallies in favor of Obama. And states like Delaware and New Jersey their votes were unanimous in favor of Obama.

she released her delegates (4.00 / 3)
to vote however they wished.

Here's what happened - (4.00 / 2)
At breakfast this morning (well, yesterday morning when you read this), Mark Brewer announced that when we signed in after breakfast to receive our daily credential, that we would also vote. Voting on a list is a whole lot easier than trying to get everyone together in a huddle on the convenition floor. In fact, that would be practically impossible - there is not enough room on the floor to scratch your elbows.

So, Hillary having previously 'released' her delegates (which has no 'legal' standing, but has moral force), that was the number of folks who switched.

I've forgotten now what our actual number of delegates, with supers, is. However, I would not be surprised if our number of votes was at least a little short. If you did not come down for breakfast, you might have missed out on voting.

Thanks for the breakfast updates (4.00 / 3)
It's great to know what has been happening at the MI breakfast meetings since Rich can't get there, as well as other things from the delegate POV. I check WMR regularly for updates!

Also... (4.00 / 5)
MAD PROPS to whoever the awesome lady was that gave the little spiel before the Michigan vote was announced. A. I was glad it wasn't Brewer, and B. that was definitely the best spiel from any of the states. Michigan *has* been the hardest hit by Hurricane George, and I'm glad she pointed it out.

Speaking of hurricanes, I hope someone makes a reference to Katrina either tonight or tomorrow. Jimmy Carter was on CNN with Keith and Tweety, and he got to talk about how his administration formed FEMA with the idea that it would be run by someone with experience in emergency management (shocker!) and how Bush installed Brownie (President Carter actually referred to Brown as "Brownie." I LOLed.).

I wish the networks would show more of what's actually going on on the floor. I can get it online and via the blogs and Twitter, but the average American has to rely on the networks, who would rather listen to their talking heads talk than actually show the convention. They want to talk about PUMA and the nomination fight while the party is actually talking about alternative energy, ending the war, national security, etc.

And of course by CNN I mean MSNBC. Oy. (4.00 / 3)

Tina Abbott (4.00 / 7)
Her statement:
From the state most devastated by the unfair, failed trade and economic policies of George W. Bush and John McCain that have shipped our jobs overseas, pushed gas to $4 a gallon, and left our children with the burden of their irresponsible choices on everything from health care to Iraq, from the state with the most to gain from Barack Obama's plan to create jobs by investing in renewable fuels and retooling our manufacturing sector, Michigan proudly casts 27 votes for Hillary Clinton and 125 votes for the next President of the United States, Barack Obama.

Bobble Obama... (4.00 / 4)
is very happy at Barack Obama being the party's nominee.

One final thought before I shut up. (4.00 / 5)
For personal reasons my ears perk up when New Hampshire is mentioned (don't ask...long story), and I was intrigued by the unanimous Obama vote from the NH delegates. Hillary won New Hampshire, and for all the NH delegates to switch and vote for Obama shows A) New Hampshireites are awesome people who believe in unity and doing what's right to take back our country, and B) what a slap in the face to the PUMAs.

PUMAs (4.00 / 4)
I think the unanimous votes are telling in how very tiny in number (and ineffective) the PUMAs are, and how the MSM feed them.

What does "PUMAs" mean, please? n/t (4.00 / 3)

I talked with a bunch of Hillary delegates (4.00 / 5)
and have not met a single PUMA. There may be 1% or 2% of the delegation, but the MSM sure does love them. They keep the 'fight' narrative going.

Mark (4.00 / 2)
Could you describe the reasoning behind why some in the Michigan delegation stuck with Hillary and voted for her at the breakfast?

PUMAs (0.00 / 0)
I don't think the PUMAs are the group of Hillary supporters that Obama needs to be concerned about.  They are a very small percentage of Democrats (1% to 2% sounds right) and will never be convinced otherwise.  They're more than evened out by hard core conservatives who won't support McCain.

What Obama does need to be worried about are the middle group of Hillary supporters described very well by Geraldine Ferraro in this article:  http://www.nydailynews.com/opi...  These people are the reason that Obama and McCain remain neck and neck in the polls.

No one can force these people to vote for Obama.  Most aren't simply going to vote for Obama because McCain is a worse alternative.  Obama has yet to win this group over and they are the group most likely to cost him the election.

Geraldine Ferraro (0.00 / 0)
Please, Brady, I wouldn't take what Ferraro says too seriously. She went off the deep end months ago.

[ Parent ]
Release (4.00 / 3)
Hillary did release her delegates to vote for whomever they wanted.
