What part of "NO!" don't you understand?

So, the Senate has agreed to vote on this bill tonight. Basically, the Republicans are getting everything that they want while the Democrats seem oddly beholden to Bush and his policies. (Somehow, I think campaign contributions may have something to do with this.)

I made several attempts to call our Senators earlier today to register my extreme displeasure with the republican version of the bailout bill steamrolling through any appeal to common sense. Senator Stabenow's office said she hasn't made her mind up, while I couldn't get a polite response from Levin's office.

Now, the Free Press reports:

Michigan Sen. Carl Levin said he would back the plan.

“The risks to the economy are just simply too great to let this continue to free fall,” Levin said. “There’s too many people’s pensions and savings and businesses that could get wiped out. There are no guarantees this will turn it around quickly, but without this kind of a stabilization package the confidence will be shot. It’s already shaky, and it will be shot if Congress doesn’t act.”

Sen. Debbie Stabenow said she remained uncommitted. “I’m still looking at it,” Stabenow said. “I understand the seriousness of it, but I want to make sure it addresses the underlying fundamentals on housing.”

Congress was elected to represent the will of the people. Yes, we know something has to be done, but you mean to tell me with a democratic senate and a democratic house, we can't even get help for homeowners in this bill? Seriously?

It's not too late to act. We have clogged up the e-mail system, so e-mails won't get through. But you can place a call to your Senator TODAY and tell them that NO means NO! We are positive that we can hold out for a better deal that helps regular people on Main Street!

The Sky is not falling (4.00 / 1)
Rep. Sherman: 'Sky didn't fall' from bailout defeat

A California congressman opposed to the Bush administration's bailout package said "the sky did not fall" after the House rejected the bill, despite consternations from "Wall Street fear mongers."

Rep. Brad Sherman (D) didn't call Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson a Chicken Little outright, but he did say the dire consequences Paulson and others warned about didn't happen after the House rejected the bailout Monday. "They claimed the market would drop by 2,000 points if we failed to do so quickly."

Needless to say, that did not happen. So, why are they lying to us?

What kind of response did you get from Sen. Levin's office? (0.00 / 0)
I noticed that you wrote

Rude and incompetent (4.00 / 1)
Basically, the lady answering the phone acted like she didn't know what in the heck was going on and wasn't used to answering constituent questions. Something I find hard to believe in one of the most hotly debated votes in recent history.

Make that two. (4.00 / 1)
I got the same kind of a reaction from the Obama campaign.

Stabenow was very responsive.  I got two or three timely email responses/updates from her.

I LOVE DEBBIE!!! (4.00 / 1)
It's nice to know that I didn't get the runaround when I talked to Sen. Stabenow's office today. She resisted the arm-twisting and the herd mentality and voted her conscience - voting NO on the sell-out of ordinary, hard-working people. The Senate version of the bailout bill was all give and very little get and I'm sure that's why she stood against the majority of her peers and voted no.

I know Michigan has two Senators, but Debbie Stabenow is MY Senator and I love her more and more each day!

(Besides, she gives great hugs :-)
