Post Debate Twist and Shout - MI Style

by: LiberalLucy

Fri Oct 03, 2008 at 10:25:04 AM EDT

As you all probably know by now, our fabulous and fearless Governor Granholm played the role of Sarah Palin in helping VP candidate Joe Biden prep for last night's debate.

Walt Sorg, talk host of AM Lansing had a great interview with her this morning about the prep process and her reaction to last night's war of words. Hear the interview here

As to Palin's strategy, well this guy nailed it right on the head with his flow chart, because it seems exactly the strategery (yes, you read that right) that she used.

And then there's this, because I'm pretty sure this was also part of the grand scheme. *sigh*

Sarah Palin, singlehandedly setting women in politics back 100 years for 5 weeks now.

Priceless! (4.00 / 4)
LL, I love your debate strategy prep grid! It's hysterical and on the money.

Haha, thanks! (4.00 / 5)
I just can't take credit for it, but yes - it's very funny, probably because it's so true. :-)

fantastic.... but (4.00 / 3)
I must say that I disagree that Palin has single-handedly set back women in politics. She's an aberration, not a real representative of what female politicians are generally like. She was obviously not selected due to her intellect or her experience - she was selected to fire up a powerful portion of the GOP base that was very tepid in supporting McCain.

She doesn't set back women in politics any more than GWB or Dan Quayle set back white men.

I actually think it's pretty revealing that the first female that the Republican party decided to put on a ticket was a vapid Barbie doll. A lot of women, regardless of party affiliation, feel that in their gut. It says a lot about what the GOP thinks a woman should be - a purty girl who says what the big boys tell her to say, and doesn't complicate things by thinkin' all that much.

I have to say that there's a story on ABC that is very entertaining:
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/10/palin-misstates.html

Sarah Palin got her facts wrong in Thursday's debate with Joe Biden when discussing where John McCain stands on new protections for homeowners facing foreclosures.

The Alaska governor incorrectly made it sound like McCain supports giving bankruptcy judges the power to rewrite mortgage payment terms on first homes.

He doesn't.

The McCain campaign confirms to ABC News that Palin misstated McCain's position.

(snip)
ACORN, a liberal group which advocates on behalf of low- and moderate-income people, seized on Palin's seeming endorsement of the Obama-Biden position and is now trying to use them to pressure McCain to change his official position.

"Sarah was just being Sarah," ACORN's Charles Jackson told ABC News. "It's clear from the transcript that she supported the provision that Senator Biden  brought up.  We'll see if McCain's handlers will allow her to continue to hold that position tomorrow."

"Sarah was just being Sarah" - oops, she spoke her mind! (Or she didn't really follow the question properly because she was too busy looking through her cue cards). And we'll see if McCain's handlers ALLOW her to keep holding that position? Hilarious. I know it's coming from a liberal source... but you know it's true. Expect either a retraction (they'll call it a "clarification") or a complete denial that she ever said it. (Is it just me, or does it seem as if McCain and his handlers don't realize there is such a thing as video and audio recordings? They're often denying things they've said & done, even when it was recorded.)

Just imagine if she were the VP, sitting down with representatives from other countries, and accidentally gets her cue cards mixed up and tries to vamp. Do you want her within 100,000 yards of diplomacy? Do you think McCain would entrust her with any responsibility? I don't think so - even if she SHOCKINGLY claims that the VP should have more power.

So, to sum up, she is not a representative sample of most female politicians. She's just a Republican man's fantasy of what a woman should be - pretty and deferential to the man. When she doesn't do what the man has scripted her to do, she will be scolded and mend her ways.

That was HILARIOUS.

I was getting ready to disagree with you... (4.00 / 4)
...but then I reread it, and found myself totally agreeing with you, especially this -

So true, so sad and so true. Thanks for making me think. :-)

I think it says a lot about the GOP, when you consider (4.00 / 2)
that the Republican party has plenty of smarter, more knowledgeable female politicians they could have selected. Several of them from bigger states that could theoretically be more helpful to the ticket, several of them with far more political experience than Palin. While I would disagree with them on policy, they would have a lot more knowledge and bring more experience to the table than Palin does.

Palin was picked for one reason in particular: she met the criteria to be the dog-whistle to the hard-right fundies. She's a far-right evangelical and pretty, and will do what she's told. That's all the boys who run the Republican party care about. They could see the writing on the wall before the VP picks were made - McCain would have a very difficult time winning in November, given his loyalty to Bush and the economy. The Republican party leader's goal was clear - get money pouring into the RNC, because McCain won't be able to draw it alone. They need their evangelical wing to put up money in order to keep from an embarassing blow out and losing a lot more ground in Congress and in downticket races. If the Evangelicals stay home & don't vote, the Repulicans are in serious trouble. Palin's selection wasn't about getting McCain elected - it was about getting the evangelical money pouring into the party coffers for general party use.

A lot of female Republicans I know are deeply bothered by her selection as the VP. They actually find it rather insulting to women. She's not a good representative of what a smart, well informed political leader who happens to be female. They feel a bit miffed that this lightweight was tapped not on her merits, but instead on "celebrity" potential.

But...but (4.00 / 4)
gay rights...

how have the conservatives, (4.00 / 1)
particularly the militant anti-gay rights "folks", responded to Palin's apparent support of legal rights for gay couples? (I didn't notice if she did one of her winks during that answer). Me thinks they should be gettin' the vapors.
