On the ground in Flint

by: matt

Mon Nov 03, 2008 at 19:03:01 PM EST

Went out to volunteer today and got sent off to Flint, where my task was to walk the streets and hand out door hangers. Easy stuff.

The last precinct we did over by Hurley Hospital...damn. All I can say, is...damn. Empty lots, abandoned houses all over the place, phone boxes ripped open and stripped of copper...The stuff that makes you wonder: "what country am I in?"

Yet with this and all of the bad news that's come out of Flint over the years it was refreshing to see that there's also still some very vibrant, neatly-kempt - downright beautiful - neighborhoods in the city too. It was a great time walking these streets and talking to folks.

Had my first visit to Angelo's Famous Coney Dogs for lunch. Absolutely classic...and deliciously horrible for one's health.

Everywhere we went, Obama signs all over the place. Just about everyone was gung-ho Obama, Obama, Obama. That's Flint. Hopefully it translates into a knockdown margin tomorrow.

Still, there were a few Palin-McCain signs:

Kind of says it all right there.

Anyone else have any volunteer tales to share?

From the trenches... (4.00 / 2)

I've been running phone banks for GOTV and candidate support for the last two weeks and I can report:

  • Strong support for pro-equality candidates
  • Obama supporters are eager to tell you that they voted for Obama/Biden
  • Too many people have left Michigan and relocated elsewhere for work (keeping a Michigan phone # for contact purposes)
  • One very emphatic woman told me that "Sarah Palin is the Devil's handmaiden"
  • Olive burgers and rainbow colored Twizzlers are the key to volunteer hearts

Do stupid people know they are stupid?

so many great stories & thoughts come to mind (4.00 / 3)
but I must admit that my mind is a little frazzled at the moment. Pre-election jitters, I think.

The main, overriding thought for me is that I've met so many wonderful people - volunteers, staffers for different candidates. So many people who want to help.

Also, I've talked with so many passionate voters, and only a few undecided voters that truly were on the fence. Most people I talked to - whether on the phone or in person - have been very, very nice.

I've tended to be volunteering in more reddish areas that appear to be turning pretty firmly blue. It brings me a lot of hope for our future.

Here's hoping we elect some terrific leaders that will help many of Michigan's cities - especially cities like Flint.
