Idealism vs. Realism

by: rchsdems

In hearing the recent news of Rep. Waxman's interest in taking the House Committee on Energy and Commerce's top job, I was a bit puzzled by a few things.

Being a  huge Congress nerd, I am very familiar with Rep. Waxman as well as his accomplishments in the House.  But with that, I also am familiar with Rep. John Dingell's record.

Our country, our state, and our government would be in such worse positions if it were not for Congressman Dingell's record of leadership and accomplishment throughout his tenure in the House.

rchsdems :: Idealism vs. Realism

I consider myself to be a very progressive individual, one who would love to see a complete turn around in production methods of the auto industry, to see huge CAFE standard increases, and to move as quickly as possible to address these key issues.

But along with being ideologically progressive, I also am a reasonable and practical person. That being said, all House Democrats can agree that we absolutely need to change our ways to address the issue of climate change as soon as absolutely possible.  But to think that this can happen over night is completely unrealistic, although it would be ideal.  To me, seeing strong leaders in our party who address important issues in a responsible way who take all interests into account is more important than someone who will attempt to pass a more progressive agenda in a quick, irresponsible time frame.

Congressman Dingell has been the working class people's primary advocate during his years in Washington and will always continue to put the interest of the working class at the top of his list.  Instead of risking losing thousands and thousands of more jobs in Michigan and around the country, Dingell wants to make sure that the auto industry works closely with Congress to accomplish these goals in a manner that is beneficial to everyone in the long run.

But really, the auto industry aside, Congressman Dingell has been one of the most effective leaders that the House has seen.  His record as chairman in the 110th Congress is a pretty good indicator of this; passing 91 bills through the house and holding 174 hearings.

The House needs effective leaders with proven track records, and John Dingell is that person for Energy and Commerce, and as progressives, and Michiganders we all need to offer our support to Congressman Dingell.

Contact Chairman Dingell and let him know that he is your voice in Congress, and that you will continue to stand with him, while he stands for all of us Michiganders!
