Thinking of shopping at Wal-Mart this Holiday Season?

by: WakeUpWalmart

Mon Nov 24, 2008 at 17:22:00 PM EST

(During this economy it's tough to resist the low prices, but this is food for thought.   - promoted by DianeS)

If you are, I'm sure the Chinese will be psyched.

Wake Up Walmart, who I'm working with, has a great new video up highlighting the perils of supporting the Bentonville behemoth.

In their quest to cut costs, Walmort outsources more and more jobs overseas. It's come to the point where 70% of Walmart products are now made in communist China. "In the race to the bottom, Walmart gets ahead and the middle class falls behind," the ad warns.

WakeUpWalmart :: Thinking of shopping at Wal-Mart this Holiday Season?
I know I'm just kind of preaching to the choir about how ugly Walmart's business practices. But in the spirit of the holiday season, I'd like to invite you to do one of three things:

1. Send this ad to your friends and family. Walmart's low prices are deceiving and in this struggling economy, a lot of good people might be fooled. It's important that we get the word out about the high cost of these low prices.

2. Visit WakeUpWalmart.com today and learn how you can help. With the election over, if you have time to join the good fight, we could always use your support.

3. Blog about how the Obama administration should have a say in curbing Walmart's ugly business practices. This isn't only a case of a corporation out of control; it's a case of worker abuse, shoddy environmental practices and an active union-busting agenda.

We're fighting for more than just winning elections. We are fighting for a more progressive America.

In this time of economic peril, it's more important now than ever. I urge you all to join the fight and send a strong message to Walmart!

Sounds better all the time... (0.00 / 0)
It will go with foreign made autos and the foreign made clothes and junk that they can afford to buy with their unemployment checks and their part-time minimum wage jobs.

Since MI has been hung out to dry by Obama and the west coast liberals, I feel no need to support anything that doesn't directly benefit this state.

Here's another example of MI tax dollars going to support the coasts.   From dailykosHigh Speed Rail coming to America - Kerry introduces landmark bill (UPDATE 4)

dk, you seem really (4.00 / 4)
pissed at Obama, and he has yet to take the oath of office. Wouldn't it be prudent to wait and see what he actually does, and what results those actions have, before writing off the next four years?

You are right that I am pissed. (0.00 / 0)
What do you think of what he is doing to the big three?  When I read and watch what is going on on the Hill and hear Obama's public comments, I think it is a double standard, a sadistic feeding, and a complete flip-flop on what he said while campaigning in MI and OH.

Are you aware that Chrysler is cutting 5,000 more jobs by the end of December?  Those are people and families.  The banks have cleaned out peoples homes and savings.  Way too many people in this state have been on the verge of collapse for 8 years without any acknowledgement or support from DC.  We are sitting on a 9.3% unemployment.

Give him time.  Time to do what?  He resigned from the Senate just a few days before the autos came and a few days after he "personally whipped" 780 billion dollars to WS. This is not what he promised.

I hope I turn out to have jumped the gun and wrong, wrong, wrong; but I have little faith in anyone in politics.

Not the change I believed in (4.00 / 1)
Happy Camper, I can't speak for DJ, but I share the same sentiments. Obama wants to regulate ethics in the auto industry, and has closed the purse strings to low-interest loans that would help save our jobs. But cash without strings to big banks is 'okay.' I'm not sure who will be left to take advantage of the financing the banks are now 'supposed' to make available. This is not what was promised on the campaign trail in the midwest states that won him the election. I'll bet you it will be a long, cold time before we see him here in Michigan again. I was excited about the coming inauguration. Now it will be just another day, just another politician.

The problem is connecting the dots (4.00 / 3)
the voters see the connection to bailing out Wall Street to their personal lives...what with their 401ks and home values plummeting...

They don't see the connection to Detroit.

And we as a state are doing a piss poor job of making the connection.

1/3rd a resigned to their fate

1/3rd are jumping up and down pissed and ready to start a regional pissing match

1/3rd are trying but have no idea or direction about how to accomplish the goal.

See? See what? (0.00 / 0)
That we are MI, and they don't give a sh*t.  If you aren't a coastie, you don't count.  We have Republicans busting the union, and left coast liberals thinking they are the only ones who own or can save the planet.  Neither have a clue about the industry or how far it has come.  Bottom line is that Obama lied to MI and Ohio.  Until I see anything different, that's it.

Most of the "coasties" (4.00 / 1)
are on our side.  We've dealt with less than a dozen assholes on DKos out of 200,000.

And like it or not, Barack can't do shit until January 20th.

Hang on to me.... (4.00 / 1)
Cause I'm really losing faith in everyone and everything.

Out of all the diaries... (4.00 / 3)
on dailykos discussing the auto loans, the only ones that made the rec list were the ones that were in favor of the bailout.  Everyone that wasn't in favor of it circled the drain.  The front pagers have come out in support of us.  I don't know any prominent blogger that hasn't voiced their support of the bailout.  Meteor Blades himself has ripped into people who aren't supporting the bailout.

And as far as GM goes, I'd like to know they have a plan, too.  I don't want them pulling an AIG.

Yeah, AIG wasn't required to come up with a plan.  But they should have.  So should GM.

To increase your faith in humanity: (4.00 / 1)
http://www.dailykos.com/story/...

The diary was mediocre, at best, but the comments are worth reading.  There were two guys who felt like saying something bad about the UAW so everyone piled on them.  One guy might get autobanned soon enough if he doesn't shut his piehole.

No clue about industry? (4.00 / 1)
Come on out to the northeast, where textile mills, costume jewelry, computer chips and jet engine manufacturing has dominated, then crashed.  Drive up Route 1 north through Lynn or south through Connecticut, Route 93 up through Lowell and the Merrimack Valley, 495 out through New Bedford -- you can check out plenty of shuttered factories and dead mill towns.

So maybe it's not so much that "coasties" don't have a clue about industry or how far it has come.  Maybe they just know that it can disappear pretty damn quick so it's not something you want to place all your bets on.

And please don't assume that everyone who lives near an ocean is a latte-swigging snob with a trust fund.  They're not.

Shop local stores to help our economy (4.00 / 2)
I won't set foot into a Wal-Mart. Especially after seeing the amazing documentary on Wal-Mart's practices.

Shopping locally keeps money in your community. It keeps your local businesses thriving. It keeps sales tax money flowing into your cities and our state.

Even if it costs you an extra 5 or 10 percent for an item than it would if you bought elsewhere, it is incredibly important that you shop locally.

If you are near Detroit, or want to make a great contribution to the area, consider participating in Detroit Synergy's "Shop Detroit" initiative.  http://www.detroitsynergy.org/...

Or, look for Michigan-made products in many of your local stores. Ask your grocer to try and carry more local products.

Do what you can to keep our neighbors employed, our schools funded, our cities and towns viable. Shop locally.
