Special rights for a special class of citizens

The Goat Killer introduces a bill.

In response to a pro-gay group charging into an evangelical church near Lansing and shouting "Jesus was a homo," and "It's OK to be gay," a Grandville lawmaker proposed a bill to hike penalties for disruptions of religious services.

Republican state Rep. Dave Agema's legislation increases the penalty for disruption of a religious service to a $5,000 fine.

"This disruptive behavior is not appropriate or acceptable anywhere, and not in places of worship," said Agema in a news release. "Religious freedom is a basic American right and it must be protected by increasing the penalty to deter those who would obstruct and endanger other people's rights in a church with their excessive demonstration."

I suppose I should wag my finger at the group that pulled this off and deliver a lecture about how offending the perpetually offended is counterproductive to their cause. On the other hand, I like to think that when I want to be, I can offend with the best of them, and I've never had a piece of legislation introduced as a result.  So, hats off to 'em. For the asshole set, this is work to be admired.

don't we already have laws regarding private property and trespassing? (0.00 / 0)
I don't think religious worship services should be disrupted, for the simple reason that I would not want my service disrupted by those who felt homosexuality was a sin.  That, and it really doesn't further the dialog that is needed for the 'religious right' to understand that the very Jesus they worship would find their behaviors with respect to gays reprehensible.

But, Eric, you do correctly point out the special status given to places of worship.  I'm certain that trespass charges can be filed if the disruptors were asked to leave, and did not.  We don't need another law -- and there may be a case to call this a 'hate crime'.

While I strongly disagree with the politics of the church in question, I do want them to be able to assemble in peace.

(A far more disruptive activity would be to attend the church and be openly gay, and challenge their viewpoint in that manner -- I couldn't stomach the services there, though...

Yes, we have laws forbidding both things (0.00 / 0)
