Workplace smoking has been a divisive issue in Lansing, and now Tupac Hunter wants to move it out of the hands of lawmakers and into the hands of the voters.
Legislation introduced Wednesday would put a proposed smoking ban on the November 2010 statewide ballot.
Efforts to enact a workplace smoking ban failed last year because the Legislature couldn't agree on a compromise. The Senate passed a full ban. The House approved a measure with exemptions for casinos and smoke shops.
Sen. Tupac Hunter says instead of arguing about exemptions, lawmakers should put the issue to voters.
The Detroit Democrat's bill would ban smoking in all workplaces. The measure must pass the House, Senate and governor's desk to get on the ballot.
