GM flirts with making lifelong enemy of me

by: Eric B.

Mon May 11, 2009 at 14:05:47 PM EDT

( - promoted by Eric B.)

Kind of reminds me of how Newt Gingrich left his cancer-stricken first wife for a younger, prettier woman.

General Motors is open to considering moving its headquarters from Detroit, selling off U.S. plants and even renegotiating parts of its restructuring plan with its major union, the new chief executive said Monday.

...snip...

A move by GM to leave Detroit would represent another blow for the economy of a region already reeling from the bankruptcy of Chrysler LLC and the sharp downturn in auto manufacturing.

Just this morning, representatives from the auto industry were lauding Jennifer Granholm for sticking up for them.  Although the thought does strike me that they could be using this as a negotiating stick of some kind, it's nice to know how valuable a partner they find state government and our Congressional delegation.

Meanwhile, I'm sure the Detroit News will find some reason to blame this on the unions, environmentalists, or Gretchen Whitmer's campaign to repeal Michigan's one-of-a-kind drug immunity law.

Update! ... It struck me, just as I was hitting the "Save" key that perhaps what's in the works is a brilliant plan by GM to outsource management of the company to India. Not only would it save the company millions each year, but it would also shift decision making duties outside of the good old boy network who've bolloxed the company so badly that it's now flirting with bankruptcy and threatened to drag down the rest of us.  I believe it's what the suits call "a win-win!"

It's been fairly entertaining (4.00 / 3)
this morning to watch the Michigan media and blogosphere collectively fall all over themselves over this story. Somebody asked a pointed question, "Is GM moving?" and got a very typical corporate "everything's on the table" non-answer answer.

Six hours later, GM's moving, the sky is falling, it's somehow JMG's fault, and Elvis is alive.

Still, it's kind of insulting that this is on the table (0.00 / 0)
More and more, this kind of thing strikes me as a relationship going bad.  You're having money troubles together and it's affected how you view one another.  Eventually, one of the partners is inevitably going to start hinting that if things don't get better that he or she will just leave the other partner.  Eventually, that happens enough to where the other partner says some variant of, "Don't keep flapping your gums about it.  Pack up your shit and leave already."

On the other hand, Michigan is basically the only place where most of the people still think of GM as a good company.  Does it really make any sense whatsoever to flirt with enraging what little support you have left?  Yes, I know, the answer to that is obvious ... on the other hand, if GM were capable of acknowledging the obvious, it might not today be talking about bankruptcy as a foregone conclusion.

Maybe it's that today has been one of those in which I've suffered the unending tyranny of petty irritants, but I just can't escape the feeling that in six months I'm going to regret breaking my vow to never give my unquestioned support to any corporation or politician based on the belief that said support was long term in my best interests.
