We've had a visit from a surprise guest, Congressman John Conyers. He gave a great little speech about holding those accountable who got us into this financial mess, but there's bigger news:
After the speech someone asked him what he's done to influence President Obama, and Conyers says that just yesterday he was in the White House. The president asked Rep. Conyers for his opinion on the impending SCOTUS nomination, and Conyers said categorically that it should be a Hispanic female. Moreover, he says he initially endorsed Gov. Granholm, but has withdrawn his endorsement because the governor wrote a letter praising a US Attorney who Conyers says is guilty of "dereliction of duty."
Media gadfly Todd Heywood of Michigan Messenger got a chance to talk to the Congressman:
"[Obama] had no doubt she would make a good Supreme Court justice and I don't either. But I am not supporting somebody who is - especially when she is waiting to be considered as a possible nominee for the highest court in the land - she can write a letter telling us some U.S. attorney has done a good job when everyone in the state knows that he hasn't," Conyers said in an interview with Michigan Messenger following his address at Cobo.
The attorney is question is a current U.S. attorney, but Conyers could not recall his name. Calls to members of the congressman's staff to clarify which of Michigan's two U.S. attorneys Conyers was referring to were not immediately returned. |
