WASHINGTON -- Emboldened by success in 2008 in two Michigan districts previously held by Republicans, Democratic strategists are taking aim at U.S. Rep Thaddeus McCotter next year, considering him as vulnerable as just about any GOP member of Congress.
Here's why: McCotter spent more than $1 million to win a fourth term representing the district that covers northwestern Wayne County and stretches into southwestern Oakland but got just 51% of the vote. His Democratic opponent, lawyer Joe Larkin, got 45% of the vote spending less than $30,000.
It must be the worst kept secret in MI that McCotter is in trouble, and his district has lost the GOP edge it had in 2001 when he personally drew the boundaries of the seat with the support of the MI GOP. That said, the Dems have not found anyone yet to run against McCotter, with State Senator Anderson and State House Speaker Dillon passing on the race, which is too bad. My guess is that the Dems know that this district is getting eliminated in 2011 as Michigan is losing a Congressional District.
Update! ... The DCCC is running a brand-spankin'-new ad campaign against McCotter. Sayeth a press release:
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) today announced it's launching a paid and grassroots ad campaign targeting six Republicans who just said no to President Obama's economic recovery act that is funding critically-needed local projects and creating tens of thousands of jobs in their districts.
"We are once again going district by district to hold 'just say no' House Republicans accountable for voting against thousands of jobs for their constituents and against middle class tax cuts that would immediately help ease the economic crisis for families struggling to make ends meet," said DCCC Executive Director Jon Vogel. "In these tough times, middle class families who are worried about keeping their jobs want action in the form of middle class tax cuts and economic recovery, not the House Republicans' 'just say no' obstruction."
The radio ads will begin during drive time on Monday and will run for a week. Radio ads, automated calls, and emails will target the following six Republicans:
