Dear Carl Levin,

(cross-posted from Rainbow Mittens because a) this is important and topical, b) because for once in my life I'm proud of what I wrote and think it's fairly good, and c) because I can, gosh darnit.)

Since you're the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and have been in the Senate longer than I've been alive, I'm sure you're intimately familiar with the federal law commonly known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) that in 1993 was struck as a compromise ostensibly to let lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans to serve in our military as long as they didn't publicly acknowledge their sexual orientation.

At the time DADT was probably a good compromise. Soldiers were allowed to serve their country, but social conservatives were placated with the idea that they'd never need to know there was a gay soldier in an American foxhole. Sixteen years later, it's time for DADT to go. DADT has begun to exact an extreme toll on the readiness of our military and has taken away America's rightful place as a beacon of equality in the world. Among other stories, I'm sure you're familiar with the case of Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, a Navy airman whose training has ultimately cost American taxpayers $28 million, but who was recently discharged because he is gay. This cannot continue.

(there's more!)

PerfectStormer :: Dear Carl Levin,
President Obama promised the repeal of DADT when he campaigned for president last year. Polling shows that there is broad public support for allowing American soldiers to serve openly; even 60% of social conservatives support repealing DADT. Rep. Ellen Tauscher has introduced a bill in the House to repeal DADT. Literally hundreds of high-ranking military personnel have stated that there would be no ill effects on the American military by allowing LGBT soldiers to serve openly (and in fact this would strengthen the military by allowing us to leverage the skills of, among others, many Arabic linguists). And yet, yesterday your Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Harry Reid, gave an interview to The Advocate wherein he said that he can't find a sponsor for a similar bill in the Senate. Out of one hundred Americans elected by their fellow citizens to represent them in the United States Senate, there isn't one who is willing to stand up and call for equitable treatment for gay American soldiers.

I'd like to suggest, Senator, that you are the man for the job. As chair of the Armed Services Committee your voice carries a lot of weight; as my friend Julie is fond of saying, you've probably forgotten more about military policy than I'll ever know. You've always been respected as a leader and a moderate voice in the Senate, and yet a champion for your constituents. It's time for you to be a champion for all of your constituents.

A while back you were asked about repealing DADT and your response was pretty lukewarm. You said you just didn't think the support was there in the Senate. Frankly, sir, that's irrelevant. The president has spoken and the people agree: it's time for DADT to go. You risk nothing professionally or personally by sponsoring this bill; you are routinely re-elected by large margins and will continue to enjoy these large margins as long as you continue to choose to serve the people of the State of Michigan. On the off chance that you have a narcissistic streak-and believe me, I don't think for a moment that you do-think of it as a chance to leave a legacy as the man who opened the door for equality to all Americans who wish to serve their country.

I know you have your hands full right now with the Iraq supplemental. When that battle is finally over, I hope you'll consider taking up this fight.

Sincerely,
me

Awww shucks. (4.00 / 2)
That's quite a compliment coming from you.

DADT (0.00 / 0)
Let's address the true problem here. Why are gays not allowed in the military. Because their might be issues of distraction from the job. Our men and women have a very important job to do and therefor must not be distracted. A better question to be asked is what will happen if the homosexual members of our community are allowed to serve in the military? The issue is clear. Our men and women need to be the best they can be. I personally agree with DADT because I believe it may be a distraction to our men an women in the armed services. Until a solution comes to reverse the distractions I will still support it.

Distraction? (0.00 / 0)
Why is homosexuality a "distraction?"

[ Parent ]
Yeah (0.00 / 0)
and once upon a time mixing races in the military was considered a distraction.  Why would we expect less from our military men and women than we expect from those in every other workplace?

Because... (4.00 / 1)
people in the work place are always distracted by the homo in the cubicle next to them and CERTAINLY NOT the loudmouth in the other cubicle who's always on the phone detailing their latest self-created personal dramas for everyone to hear.
