AP: GM to build subcompact in MI

by: PerfectStormer

What a bizarre news week it's been...but it's time for some good news. Within the last couple weeks we've been hearing grumblings from the RenCen that GM was considering three sites for the manufacture of a new subcompact car (Janesville, WI, Spring Hill, TN and Orion Twp., MI). It was recently announced that manufacture of the Saturn Outlook will be moving from Spring Hill, TN to the GM Delta Twp. plant outside Lansing, and the AP is reporting more good news for the Mitten.

DETROIT (AP) - A person briefed on the decision says General Motors will build its new subcompact car at a factory in Orion Township, Mich.

The person says the automaker is scheduled to announce the move Friday. The person did not want to be identified because the plan has not been made public.

Well, let me decode this... (0.00 / 0)
I was reading something by Nolan Finley a little bit ago about how GM was taking this to Tennessee to shut Bob Corker up, because Barack Obama is actually pulling the levers behind the scenes.

Would this news be an effort to keep Michigan blue, or is it a payback to Jennifer Granholm as a fellow graduate of Harvard law?

Outlook (4.00 / 1)
slight correction stormy.

We (Lansing Delta Twp. Assembly) already build the Outlook. the Chevy Traverse is the vehicle that will be coming to Delta from Tenn.

Spring hill, Tenn. will have no scheduled production. Over 3,000 UAW workers will not have a product partly,IMHO, due to Bob Corker so publicly lobbying against GM.

I'm surprised Janesville (0.00 / 0)
was ever considered at all (and I doubt they ever really were), because the plant there is an ancient, multistory monstrosity of a building that is totally unsuited to modern manufacturing methods. The fact that their workforce is experienced and dedicated, and built highly profitable vehicles for decades obviously doesn't matter. Orion is much more up to date and centrally located to the supplier network.

Maybe Spring Hill can talk Penske into building future Saturns there instead of China, but I'm not holding my breath.

Manufacturing Saturn (0.00 / 0)
that's great news I think, though transfering the plant from Spring Hill, TN to the GM Delta Twp. plant outside Lansing may be a hassle, but if this means building Saturn cars and its parts like window regulator and some of its parts then is great. :)
