Happy 4th of July!  Here's hoping you and yours are spending a wonderful day filled with grilled meats and patriotic themed desserts.  In honor of the founding of our country, I think it appropriate that we take a minute to remember why we celebrate this day.  (Hint:  it's not grilled meats or patriotic themed desserts.)

From the National Archives:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. 

Take a minute today and reread the Declaration of Independence.  When you're done, make your own Declaration of Independence from Hunger by donating to the Million Can March.  Then, go forth and grill meats and eat red, white and blue sweet treats.

Better late than never... (4.00 / 1)
I rang in July 4 in the most patriotic way I knew ... drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon and watching a guy celebrating his 20th anniversary playing fiddle with four or five other people.  The next morning, I woke up in my tent next to a northern Michigan lake and Sam (fat lip from falling across a root the night before), broke camp, and -- after a ghost-releasing ceremony (17 were caught and confined to bubble bottles the night before by the camp's three children) caught a ride home with a guy who was himself headed to St. Louis to emcee the blues festival there.  I finished a Chuck Palahniuk novel, was frustrated by Soapblox, and wandered off to work.

There, towards the end of the night, came the sounds of drunken yahoos of Mt. Pleasant's west side (REPRESENT!) blowing things up. I, after telling a Nigerian co-worker that he could expect a representative from local law enforcement to come around before midnight to administer his loyalty oath, went home to drink gin and tonics while listening to Rule Britania.  At midnight, I blared the Mormon Tabernacle Choir out my front window -- The Stars and Stripes Forever, Hail to the Chief, Anchors Away, and the Star Spangled Banner -- before collecting the cat from outside and wandering off to bed.

But I thought only far-Right wingers and those that listen to Rush and Fox were true Americans?

All others need to be ground up into pet food (that's what conservative indoctrinator says).
