Coal plant construction jacks utility bills by one-third more in U.P.

Iron Mountain:

IRON MOUNTAIN - We Energies customers in Michigan will be paying up to 33 percent more on their energy bills in 2010 due to the $2.3 billion construction of two new generating units.

The company filed a rate increase request with the Michigan Public Service Commission on Thursday.

Roman Draba, vice president of regulatory affairs at We Energies, said that between 16 and 17 percent of the increase will be in effect for January, but additional rate increases need to be approved by the public service commission first.

...snip...

Draba explained that the "main driver" of the rate increase is the construction of two 615-mega-watt, coal-fueled generating units at Elm Road Generating Station in Oak Creek, Wis. Construction on the project began in 2005 and is scheduled for completion in December.

I just became aware of this, but it's worth thinking about while also remembering that the construction of the other proposed coal plants likewise will get passed right along to customers.

Now is the time to stop new coal plants in Michigan! (0.00 / 0)
The announcement of the 33% increase in costs of electricity for WE Energies customers comes when the two largest proposed coal fired power plants are under review at the Public Service Commission and the DEQ for whether there is a "need" for the power and whether there are "feasible and prudent alternatives" to coal plants to meet any such need.  This is a timely warning about the importance of assuring that the concerns of ratepayers as well as anyone concerned about our future are being listened to, not just the "clean coal" oxymorons.

Consumers Energy's proposed Karn Weadock plant and Wolverine Power Supply Cooperative's proposed Rogers City plant both submitted inadequate information to the Michigan Public Service Commission regarding whether their is a need for the power they want to produce.

The PSC is taking comments until July 7th (tomorrow) on the Consumers proposed plant, and July 9th on the Wolverine proposed plant.  You can go to www.cleanenergynowmi.org to submit comments on both.

Today, furlough day at the state, the E-dockets at the PSC for both Consumers and Wolverine are totally screwed up, but you should be able to send in comments by email to mpscedockets@michigan.gov -- identify your comments in the subject line as either Consumers Energy U-15996 or Wolverine Power U-16000.
