Dingell town hall

by: Eric B.

Wed Aug 05, 2009 at 14:07:41 PM EDT

Unless you've been living under a rock these last few days, you probably know about the corporate-funded, organized efforts to get wingnuts to show up to Congressional townhalls this month to stage "impromptu" protests over health care reform.  Tomorrow night, Rep. John Dingell is hosting a townhall in Romulus.

As we probably all know by now, the state's rightwing has essentially declared their intention to a-git Dingell, given his long history of advocating on behalf of universal health care. It's their goal to show up and shout and yell and yell and shout until everyone thinks that volume is the same thing as passionate engagment, and that Americans really don't think there's anything wrong with the health care system.

If you're otherwise not engaged tomorrow evening -- say 5:30-ish -- and it's not too much trouble, consider showing up.  Address: 35765 Northline Road in Romulus.

Health care system... (0.00 / 2)
Health care system has been a controversial issue of all times.Lots of people dream of moving to the Big City, or something to that effect.  What they don't tell you is that living in the Big City is one thing above all others, every time, which is that it's really expensive.  (And has a higher crime rate!) Well, CNN Money is poised to disabuse you of any ideas you had to the contrary, as there is a CNN calculator for costs.  You enter your current income into their cost of living calculator, where you want to move, and it will tell you what will cost more.  A lot of people need to get a personal loan to make rent on a lousy one bedroom in the Big City.

LansingMiTeaParty contact info (0.00 / 0)
Helpfully, the LansingMiTeaParty blog listed the contact info of their organizer who is staging the protest against Dingell tonight.  The misguided teabagger is Aletheia Henry.
Her number is 313-791-2707
[per their website, I only mention it to be helpful if anyone wants to talk to her directly)  :D

When BAMN did it... (0.00 / 0)
Hmmm.

Free speech for thee but not ....

When Bruce Fealk acted the fool last year, or BAMN shouted down a Board of Canvassers meeting to the point where they rioted and flipped over the table where the Canvassers were sitting, the outrage on the left was deafeningly silent.

Give me a break.  This is no where close to crossing the line, though I would prefer counter-protests at Townhalls to be more civil (but still expressive), after "hand-picked "Townhall" audiences" where no one on the other side can even get in to politely ask tough questions, I understand the frustration of the few on the right that seem "loud" to you.

Nowhere close to crossing the line?  Seven people were arrested in Tampa,d a fistfight broke out in St. Louis, one representative was booed out of his own townhall, and one received death threats.

Give us a break.

Hmm. Classic groupthink smear (0.00 / 0)
Bruce Fealk was arrested.  You defended him in that instance, and I never argued the arrest itself meant anything - only the facts underlying the arrest.  I'll let the instance and evidence of individual cases be determined by juries of peers & due process.

An arrest isn't a conviction.  You know that.

So let's look at the "sensational violence" in Tampa you refer to?  Here's the Tampa Tribune's best online video!!!!
http://www.tampabay.com/video/...

Nothing outrageous there.  The story with the video even suggests that the Congresswoman and the SEIU sponsored event stacked the audience, as I said above.  The video shows people trying to get in - and being locked out.  I don't see any flagrant disruptive behavior there, let alone illegal.

As to St. Louis, I tried finding something on it but won't spend a bunch more time.  If there was a "fistfight," I'd note it takes two to do that.  Someone on each side is responsible - neither of whom can be excused.  Obviously death threats are unacceptable ... prosecute the hell out of them but I don't see any evidence of that or people arrested for it, and certainly there have been death threats against people on the right in the past and recently and its hardly something you can paint responsibility to a whole group for.  That is, if a death threat was made by some nutcase claiming to be against health care, every person against national health care is not responsible.  Indeed, the same is true of a fistfight or other isolated incidents.

The events I've been at have been peaceful assemblies.  As a person interested in reporting events of news, I'd certainly be more interested in being at all or any of these rallies where something happens and will report it either way.  But I'm also a critical thinker and call it like I see it.  I don't see it.  You haven't proven up any substantial case for coordinated violence, and the vast majority of these assemblies are peaceful.  You despise the message, which is fine; but have the decency and perspective to respect the rights of people to (try) to deliver it to their elected officials (try, since the "Townhalls" are audience stacked, as the Tampa Tribune/SEIU hosting proves)

This.... (4.00 / 1)
is every argument Chetly has ever given:

Everything the right-wing has done is easily justified because I say so.  Even when they eat babies or rape kittens I will find an excuse to either say it didn't really happen or find some other liberal to blame it on, because even though conservatives preach about personal responsibility, we don't really believe in it.

Chetly, just copy and paste that from now on.  It'll save you some time so you'll have more time to concentrate on your favorite activities such as going to McDonalds, getting in pie eating contests, and seeing how many slices of pizza you can shove down your throat at once.

Putting conservatives in charge of our government makes about as much sense as GM hiring a CEO who hates cars.

1.  Where did I mention "sensational" violence.  Yet, you put quote marks around it as if it came directly from stuff I'd written.  This is a nationwide pattern of disruptive behavior, of attempting to shout people down in a carefully orchestrated nationwide campaign.

2.  Bruce Fealk has nothing to do with this.  Stop with the false equivalencies.

3.  There is far more damning video from Tampa than what was possessed by the Tampa Tribune.  You can find it easily enough, unless you think that video cameras held by Democratic operatives have a liberal bias.

These are all largely rhetorical questions and points.  As I've pointed out elsewhere, I'm not so interested in spending time splitting hairs and arguing over what the follicle looks like, which is usually what happens when I get drawn into a debate with you (is torture really torture, and how can any of us be certain that what constitutes torture in one case isn't in fact a fraternity prank in another?).
