Heroes

As in, could have been heroes.

It didn't have to get to this. They didn't have to take our kids, K-12 / Community College / University students, and threaten to pull the trigger on the quality of their education, in order to start a conversation about revenue.

They could have talked all summer long about alternatives which improved the bottom line, like those laid out by ABetterMichiganFuture.org, and Michigan League of Human Services.

They could have started working on real budget reform immediately following the 2007 budget debacle, and implemented it immediately following the 2008 election, with the winds of change at their backs.

They could have pointed to studies indicating a crying need for investment in our education system from top to bottom, especially in urban centers, in order for our economy to grow.

But no.

They had to use the kids like human shields.

And now we're being told by house members that it's the senate we need to pressure, that senate Republicans are the bottle neck.

Fine, we'll make even more calls -- or at least we hope our friends who are constituents in key districts will make those calls, because they aren't going to take them from Dems outside their districts.

(You can start with Kahn, Richardville, Jansen and Jelinek. Make sure they hear from angry parents in their district who are going to have to explain to their kids why our legislators aren't able to ensure they get a solid education from K-college.)

Legislators didn't have to resort to passing the buck. They didn't have to frighten and spook the newest young voters and activists, nor did they have to piss off parents.

They could have been heroes if they'd simply bucked up and dealt with budget reform two years ago, had simply found revenue enhancements during the most recent budget negotiations.

To the Dems who held the line and voted NO on cuts to education, thank you -- but let's hope it's not too little, too late. Let's hope those young folks who represent our newest crop of voters and activists are understanding and ready to go to bat for their progressive champions next year.

By the way (0.00 / 0)
For those morons out there who think the angry students rallying about the broken Promise are merely astroturfing, you have no clue what you're talking about.

If you're PAID to call it astroturfing, you should look in the mirror.

Who could possibly (0.00 / 0)
Call it astro-turfing?  Especially when it's basically the complete opposite?  Kids are rallying because of money being taken away from them, not because of money being given to them.

Who, you ask? (0.00 / 0)
People paid to write crappy public policy in support of unfettered corporatism call these kids astroturfers, indulging in the worst sort of projection.

Disgusting; it's another variant of real astroturfing, not unlike the corporate-funded teabagging we've seen this year.

They wouldn't recognize real grassroots activism if their mouths were filled with sod.
