All I Want to Do Is Pee

by: PerfectStormer

Wed Oct 21, 2009 at 11:54:51 AM EDT

Gutter politics rides again. We're two weeks out from Election Day in Kalamazoo, and the Anti-Gay Boogeymen are resorting to the oldest, most disgusting trick in the book, the Transgender Bathroom Panic. They've released a new flyer featuring pictures of some famous (and not-so-famous) transgendered folks, accompanied by OMGSCARY blurbs about their alleged transgendered transgressions...stuff like wanting to go to the bathroom. The insinuation, of course, is that if there's a transgendered person using a restroom, that person must be on the prowl looking for helpless pretty young women to rape.

Before we go any further, it's worth noting that the Kalamazoo nondiscrimination ordinance doesn't mention restroom access even once. It's aimed at stopping employers from firing employees because of their sexual orientation and ensuring fair and equitable access to city employment and services...but I digress.

I'm not transgendered and I wouldn't dare dream of speaking for the transgendered community in most cases, but in this case I think it's pretty fair to assume that if a transgendered person is fighting for access to a bathroom, all they want to do is pee.

PerfectStormer :: All I Want to Do Is Pee
I don't want to come into the women's bathroom and rape anyone. I don't want to force my (alleged) Gay Agenda down anyone's throat. I don't want to convert your children. I don't want them taught sex education in fourth grade. I don't want to turn America into a Satan-worshipping cesspool of debauchery.

I want what you have.

I want the ability to go to work and not live in fear of being fired because of my sexual orientation. I want to be able to secure housing and not be thrown out because of my sexual orientation. I want equal (not special, equal) access to city services, and my sexual orientation should never come up in such a conversation. I want to apply for a job with the City of Kalamazoo and not have to check a box on the application disclosing my sexual orientation. And occasionally (several times a day, in fact), I want to pee. That's it.

On a related note, the following story appeared on WOOD TV8 in Grand Rapids highlighting the case, and I have to say that it's one of the most onesided and factually inaccurate pieces of junk I've ever seen on a local TV station. In the report, WOOD reporter Marc Thompson shows a picture of the flyer with a voiceover that says: "they (the Yes on 1856 folks) say that if the ordinance passes, men like this will be able to use the women's restroom." Thompson fails to note that under Michigan law, a person who has undergone sex reassignment surgery and had their gender legally changed at the federal level is entitled to have their gender changed on their state vital records. In other words, the "men" referred to in Thompson's report are legally, technically, officially, biologically women.

Nevermind the fact that putting on a dress, wig and makeup is a ridiculous length to go to if you're hellbent on raping someone...but to suggest that a person would actually undergo sex reassignment surgery, fight with the federal government for months over their vital records, and then fight with the State of Michigan for months over their vital records...well, by then I'm sure the urge to rape someone has long since passed, but that's beside the point.

Now if you'll excuse me, I drank a cup of coffee while writing this post and I have to pee. Fortunately I can do it at home without fear of being accosted by a cough citizen voting no on special rights discrimination.

Hate & Fear... (4.00 / 4)

That's what the anti-human rights people are screaming about.  They fear things they don't understand and they hate being told they are wrong.

Two years ago, I was your typical pro-equality ally who was all about the L, the G and the B but completely confused by the T.  So instead of fearing something I didn't understand, I asked questions.  Thanks to the very brave and amazing Dr. Julie Nemecek, I learned an enormous amount about the Transgender community and I have nothing but respect for someone who goes through the huge struggles it takes to transition.

Oh, and I've happily shared bathroom quarters with Dr. Julie Nemecek for the last two years and frankly, I'd much rather have her in the stall next to me than some random woman.

Do stupid people know they are stupid?

Attacking the Transgendered (4.00 / 3)
Stormy, I absolutely agree with you on 99% of what you wrote (not sure on the 4th grade sex ed).  As more and more gays and lesbians come out of the closet and social acceptance has risen dramatically over the past decade to the point where it is often now socially unacceptable to be anti-gay, anti-gay activists have been forced to attack the transgendered to gain any sort of traction with fear based politics.  It's disgusting.  Unlike with gays or lesbians, there aren't enough transgendered folk to push for broad social acceptance as we have done.  This makes it very important for social justice that we LBG activists educate ourselves about what it means to be transgendered even though it is a very foreign concept to most of us.

One troubling trend I've seen in my own experience is that as the poltiical element of being gay diminishes with greater social acceptance, the political acceptance of transgendered people by younger mainstream gay men is diminishing.  Thank you for posting this thread.

One troubling trend I've seen in my own experience is that as the poltiical element of being gay diminishes with greater social acceptance, the political acceptance of transgendered people by younger mainstream gay men is diminishing.

That is especially troubling since the modern LBGT movement pretty much wouldn't have started (or would have started even later) without our fabulous T's...

Just wait, it'll get better! (4.00 / 1)
Based on past experience, stay tuned for the full-page spread in the local paper, signed by any and every "big cheese" in town, against 1856.  Then the radio ads will hit.  Oh boy.

"Action is what separates a belief from an opinion."

Which Big Cheeses? (4.00 / 1)
I'm not sure who you're expecting, but the City Commissioners passed the ordinance unanimously. Twice.

And One Kalamazoo has been running a television ad already.

So, although I'm sure the opposition will keep hitting back, this is hardly a sky-is-falling moment.

I would argue that it is. (0.00 / 0)
...but for the other side. They're pulling out their big last minute "OMG we're gonna lose!" stuff now. It smacks of desperation, if you ask me.

Big cheeses (4.00 / 1)
The money people.  Not your city commissioners.  Heads of churches, local businesses, chamber, school officials, etc.
