Vote on smoking ban nears

by: Eric B.

Tue Dec 08, 2009 at 20:24:11 PM EST

Mike Bishop says we may yet get a vote on the workplace smoking ban this week. He himself prefers that we leave things up to Magic Market Fairies to sort out.

“I think the House will pass just about whatever we send them,” Bishop said. “I think that really is what it comes down to. There’s a lot of pent up demand to vote on this.”

...snip...

“My objection is that families and people have the ability to make personal decisions on their own,” Bishop said. “I’m like any other parent, if I don’t like a smoking environment, I don’t go.

“If enough people choose to make that personal decision we could move the market with our business activity.”

This would be well and good if the restaurant and bar owners were actually forced to pay the costs for allowing people to smoke on their premises, and we may yet get that if the state Legislature continues to dick around on this issue.  Eventually, someone will contract lung cancer after working as a bartender and will sue their former employer for keeping an unsafe workplace.  It's kind of like the set of circumstances that now explains why it's so tough to get served in bars if you're falling down drunk. Again, I think that Mike Bishop less believes in free markets than he believes in a world without consequences.

Meanwhile, I'm probably not the only human being on Earth who thinks this may be a pre-Election Year treat to the people of Michigan from a Legislature whose leaders want to run for statewide office next year. A workplace smoking ban polls well, and business owners who help subsidize health insurance are starting to revolt at the high costs of unhealthy lifestyle choices (i.e. smoking and drinking lots and lots and lots of booze). So, it makes natural sense for legislative leaders who can't properly fund K-12 education to make concessions elsewhere.

Merry Christmas, Michigan.  You'll be able to eat your cheeseburgers in a smoke-free environment. Just don't pay attention to what's happening in your local school district.

Random intellectual inconsistency from Stormy... (4.00 / 3)
...cuz that's what Stormy's good at:

1. On the one hand, certain restaurant owners and barkeeps will tell you that if smoking is banned business will dry up and their restaurants will blow away because smokers won't go out. What they don't tell you is that right this very moment there are plenty of people out there who live on the other side of the smoking coin and refuse to patronize certain establishments because they're just too smoky. This very weekend I was out and about with two lovely ladies who both have serious sensitivity to smoke, and while putting together dinner plans we crossed several establishments off our list because they're just too damn smoky.

2. On the other hand, today the Michigan legislature spent its collective day working on banning smoking and banning texting while driving. Meanwhile, some ungodly percentage of Michiganders are on food stamps and the Michigan Promise (the one good plan we have to maybe educate some people and then keep those smart people in Michigan) seems pretty much dead in the water. Screwy priorities much?

What do I know? I'm just a blogger...

Good one Stormy! (4.00 / 3)
Well said Stormy.  Obviously we have our priorities straight in this state.  To hell with educational funding.

Exactly! (4.00 / 1)

We hear all about the smokers who will leave restaurants/bars in droves and yet we never hear about those of us who simply can't spend time in certain establishments (or who choose not to) due to the smoky conditions.  I have a very rare complication of lupus called Shrinking Lung Disease (I've renamed it Lungardium Shrinkiosa) which means that even smoke-adjacent restaurants are out of the question for me anymore.

Don't get me started on the Michigan Legislature's priorities.  I mean, we have elected officials who opt to go hunting instead of voting on a budget, others who are so anti-anything, they vote against common sense legislation and we have a press corps that follows around the leaders of both the House and the Senate cooing over "coy aquamarine eyes".

Do stupid people know they are stupid?

If Paris, New York City and Dublin can go smoke-free, (4.00 / 1)
then surely the dining establishments of Mt. Pleasant, EL and Brighton won't crumble into dust.

As happy as I would be with a smoking ban, Stormy makes an excellent point: is this really the most important thing the state legislature could be doing right now?

Well, they're a year late with this, so... (4.00 / 1)
My guess is that they'll finally get around to fixing school funding next year 'round this time.

Among the Trees

Perhaps... (0.00 / 0)
...since it'll be a lame-duck session with an outgoing governor desperate for any sort of legislative win to polish her legacy.

But I'm not holding my breath.
