Making MI-Gov news today: John Freeman, Denise Ilitch

by: Bootsy

Tue Jan 12, 2010 at 13:12:57 PM EST

(The question is just what has done John Freeman in ... Obama's Chicago gangland thug politics, or Andy Dillon's Good Hair of Creamy Centrism. - promoted by Eric B.)

Today in the Big Race:

In an email sent to supporters a little after 12:30, John Freeman made this statement:

Having consulted with my family and given it serious reflection, I've decided to end my campaign for governor of Michigan.

Given our state's economic woes and my obligations to both my family and job, it became clear that the amount of money required to run a viable campaign was out of reach.

For the many Michiganders who welcomed me into their homes and donated their time, energy and resources to this campaign, I will be forever grateful. For the family and friends who offered me their devotion, love, and support, I am fortunate to have people like you in my life. And for all those who dream of a better future for our state, the work continues.

I will work to build a better Michigan by continuing to strive for comprehensive health care reform, so that Michigan's businesses can compete around the world, working families can be freed from skyrocketing costs, and nobody will die or be forced out of their home simply because they can't pay their medical bills.

I will continue fight for progressive ideals, just as I always have, and fully expect to support the Democratic nominee for governor.

On a final note, Supporter, I ask that you continue to strive towards a better future. Robert Kennedy said that often in politics, there's a danger of feeling futile, like there's nothing you can do against the enormity of the problems we face. Yet, Kennedy said, "each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls..."

Those ripples don't care if you're in elected office or just an everyday citizen; we all have the power to stand up for what we believe, and to create those ripples of hope. And eventually, those ripples will build up.

Together, if we all do our part, we can continue to make a wave.

Thank you.

Bootsy :: Making MI-Gov news today: John Freeman, Denise Ilitch
Also interesting: from yesterday's Wall Street Journal, the White House apparently has approached Denise Ilitch, encouraging her to run:

When Mr. Cherry dropped out, citing fund-raising problems, White House officials began discussions with a potential replacement, Denise Ilitch, whose family owns the Detroit Red Wings hockey team, Detroit Tigers baseball team and Little Caesars Pizza chain.

Ms. Ilitch is an elected member of the state Board of Regents. Strategists believe her personal wealth and image as a businesswoman and political outsider could give Democrats a boost in an economically ailing state where the party's top official, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, is unpopular.

John Freeman (4.00 / 1)
John Freeman's withdrawal from the governor's race, while not entirely unexpected, is a good news-bad news story.  The good news is that Freeman's endless energy and incredible talents are, hopefully,  now more available to the advocacy community.

John has continued to push health care reform during his candidacy, but he can now get more involved.  For those who might not know, Freeman was a key player in winning a an increase in the minimum wage, managing the ballot campaign in 2007 that pressured the Legislature to pass a minimum wage increase legislatively.

The bad news regarding Freeman's leaving the governor's race is that the potential to elect a true progressive as governor has diminished for the time being at least.

John would have made a great governor. He will continue to be a greater fighter and winner for progressives.

Denise Ilitch....lol... (0.00 / 0)
Just what Michigan Democrats need their own version of Sarah Palin with Steve Forbes like money. Whoever is trying to talk Denise Ilitch into running for Governor is obviously just looking for a big pay day with a vanity candidate. Probably just some members of Denise's entourage thinking of more ways to spend her money. It would be very funny if it was not so pathetic.

Things at Play (0.00 / 0)
Ah yes, the Democratic clusterf*ck. A few people in, a few people out. Everyone has their opinion, and rightly so. As LiberalBubba suggested a few of the more progressive candidates (Cherry, Freeman) have dropped out of the race. This leaves us with a quickly thinning deck of Democrats (Virg, Dumars, and Ilitch).

At this point, it isn't a question of who you want but who can win AND isn't Mike Cox, Pete Hoekstra, or Rick Snyder. This seems like a lesser of two-evils argument, but it isn't.

Virg, as it stands, can't raise the money. And Dillon doesn't have the support of the base. Moreover, if Ilitch officially declared she would eat into some of his cash flow. By process of elimination, the only candidate left standing is Ilitch. Who else could raise the money to take on the republicans (including Dillon) in a short enough time, and overcome the public mistrust of politicians? The ilitch name is gold in southeast michigan and she could be a very strong candidate

Again, I'd like to hear more from all the candidates before I side with one or the other. It's best practice to stay out of primary fights.

The bottom line is I want to win. When one of the candidates proves themselves in the primary, I will support them.
