Campaign news and rumors: Kildee to file Tuesday

by: Eric B.

Mon Feb 22, 2010 at 14:48:49 PM EST

(Bump! - promoted by Eric B.)

Rumor has reached my ear, and has been confirmed, that Dan Kildee plans to file paperwork Tuesday to run for governor. This has been a two-sentence diary passing along the news that Dan Kildee plans to file paperwork tomorrow to run for governor.

Previous rumors had it that Kildee would be supported in his bid by Michael Moore.

Update! ... Below the fold, Kildee's official announcement.

Eric B. :: Campaign news and rumors: Kildee to file Tuesday
“What I am hearing from people across Michigan is that Lansing is broken and we need new ideas and a clean break from the politics of Lansing that have kept us from moving forward,” said Kildee, who filed today as a candidate in the August Democratic primary election for governor.

“The people of Michigan are fed up with business as usual, and so am I. I am inviting citizens to join me in taking back our state.”

“Reforming Lansing means rethinking government to attract jobs and rebuild our economy. Relying on the same answers from the same people will just mean more of the same, something Michigan families can not afford,” Kildee said. In 2005 Kildee completed a Fellowship at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. In 2007, Kildee’s Land Bank program was named winner of the Harvard University/Fannie Mae Foundation Innovations in American Government Award for Affordable Housing, and in 2008 Kildee was the recipient of the Michigan “Excellence in Land Use Leadership Award” by the MSU Land Policy Institute and the Michigan Land Use Funders Network.

Kildee, 51, cited his award-winning economic development work pioneering neighborhood and large-scale reforms for communities that have saved Michigan families from home foreclosures.

Kildee is President/CEO of the national Center for Community Progress and was Genesee County’s treasurer from 1997 to 2009. He is the former Chair of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners.

“Lansing politicians can’t get a budget done on time and are putting extreme partisanship ahead of the people,” said Kildee. “We need the results-driven executive leadership in Lansing that I have practiced at the local level with programs like the Genesee County Land Bank.”

He will have a formal campaign announcement soon with more details of his plans for Michigan. Kildee lives in Flushing with his wife, Jennifer, and has three children.

“The decision to file today for governor isn’t about me,” said Kildee. “It’s about making sure my son, who is in college, and my daughter, who is graduating from high school this year, have opportunities in Michigan and good jobs. It’s about sons and daughters all across the state. It’s about making a clean break from the mess in Lansing and giving Michigan’s working people a governor who gets the job done and goes to work every day fighting for them and their families. “

Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner is serving as treasurer of Kildee’s campaign committee.

“Dan Kildee has the executive experience, vision and progressive ideals we need in our next governor,” said Meisner.

“His record of working across the aisle to achieve bipartisan solutions, his even temperament and proven record as a public servant make him exactly what Michigan needs to make our next chapter a success.”

Only an exploratory committee? (0.00 / 0)
I have heard that Kildee has said repeatedly that he is filing paperwork to explore a run but that he is deliberately taking 30 days to decide.  He is filing the committee only to be in compliance with campaign finance laws.

This exploratory committee thing... (0.00 / 0)
There is no such thing in law as an exploratory committee.   If Kildee files tomorrow he will legally be a candidate for governor. It's the public statement he makes that will express his intention, but I suspect he's still on his 30-day timetable.

I look forward to a debate on the issues (0.00 / 0)

I believe Mr. Kildee is out of touch with Democrats in this district. I look forward to a spirited debate on the issues.

Pst...Mr. Withers, wrong Kildee (4.00 / 1)
You do know the guy you are running against is named DALE Kildee right?  That's DAN Kildee who's eyeing the governor's race.  Or are you suggesting they are both out of touch?

(I just love these guys who ready, fire, aim)

Mr. Withers, seriously.... (0.00 / 0)
Dan is not Dale.  For one thing Dan is Pro-Choice, Dale is not.  Both endorsed, and campaigned for, Proposal 2 (the Stem Cell Proposal) in 2008 though.

Dan's a great guy.  With the right message and some help he has broad appeal.  He could've gone to Lansing anytime in the last 20 years and he never has.  I know people think of him as just waitng around for Uncle Dale to retire so he can take his Congressional seat, but anyone who has spent a few minutes with Dan knows he's basically an idealistic progressive.  Dan's a true public servant. And the last person anyone could accuse of being out of touch.  He's as down-to-earth as they come.

Just.....ugh. (shakes head)

Does Kildee have the stomach for this? (0.00 / 0)
It will be interesting to see how Kildee responds to people who come out of the woodwork or are pried out of the woodwork and are thrown at him. As the Genessee County Treasurer Dan could go where he wanted to and do what he wanted and no one cared what he was up to. Different game running for governor.

Pluralities (0.00 / 0)
Bernero  37%
Kildee 19%
DILLON  41%
Smith  3%

actual poll? (0.00 / 0)
was this an actual poll, or just speculation?  Regardless, it demonstrates the clear need for some form of choice voting, especially at the primary level.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I...

Dillon's internal numbers mean nothing (0.00 / 0)
If that's what those are.  What I want to see are the numbers that come from legit polls after Dillon's spent some money introducing himself and his opponents begin defining him as the anti-choice, anti-environment, anti-labor leader of an incompetent Legislature who doesn't have the balls to take on the Republican Senate Leader or the brains to work with a Democratic governor.

Why not just give Dillon 100 percent? (0.00 / 0)
If we're just making numbers up here.

And that's just Dillon's staff! (0.00 / 0)

I'm worried (0.00 / 0)
That Kildee and Virg split the vote and we end up with Dillon.

Funny you say that (0.00 / 0)
Kyle Mellin over at the City Pulse raised this issue in last week's edition.  But, the rumor he'd heard is that Kildee was not going to run specifically because he realized this.

They really do pull from the same constiuency.  I like Dan, but I think Virg is far more mentally in this than anyone else on the Democratic side.  What I'd like to see is Dan as the Lt. governor nominee, or the head of some newly-created Department or Urban Affairs; god knows we need one of those.

Kildee and Bernero (0.00 / 0)
I agree that for progressive Democrats it would be a bad idea for Dan, Virg and Alma to be in a four-way race with Dillon.  But I am encouraged by Kildee's decision to take this next step of filing.  We need to see him on display more and so do political donors, and we need to see both Virg and Dan in the arena together in order to take their measure.

Virg seems to be a great primary campaign warrior but I worry that his angry mayor motif will wear on general election voters.  Dan looks to me to be an almost ideal candidate for November. He's got none of the Lansing baggage, has been nationally recognized for his work with local communities, and his personality is warm and approachable.  What we need to see is if he can take a strong message of change forward, do political battle, and get the attention of donors.

In the end, I predict that assuming our wishy washy Speaker does in fact get in the race, he will face a single strong challenger.  I think the bigger question is whether Democratic donors will keep faith with whoever that is and not wave the white flag and allow Dillon to win the primary so he can go on to defeat in November.

But (0.00 / 0)
He doesn't have Lansing baggage, but even worse than that he has Flint baggage.  It's nearly impossible to run for a state-wide office, anymore, from Detroit, Flint, or Saginaw simply because of the state that they are in.  This is not to mention that the office of the governor is just as symbolically important as it is from a practical manner.  That means not only have good, solid policies, but having the charisma to inspire others and the personality to be convincing and get folks to change their minds.

I don't know enough about Kildee to really make much of a judgement either way, but while his work with land banks has been cutting edge, on the personal charisma front, I'm not seeing much where I'd be jumping out of my seat to vote for him.
