Bernero on cusp of UAW endorsement?

by: Eric B.

Thu Mar 04, 2010 at 08:11:14 AM EST

This has been dancing about the last couple of days.

The caller  was direct: I have it from a reliable source that the UAW is going to endorse the Mayor of Lansing.

Wow. The "Virg" on the verge of a mando endorsement.

Actually the caller was a day late. On Tuesday another source sent along the same story.

That prompted a call to the man. When his recorded voice came on the line, this cryptic message was left: "I'd like to run the story that the UAW is going to endorse you. Give me a buzz."

Well, actually, I thought Dillon said that private sector unions were going to support him.  Anyway, the interesting thing will be to see what electoral juice the UAW really still has.  As the number of AW's have contracted, what has that done to the impact that the UAW can wield when it comes to elections.

Congrats to Virg (0.00 / 0)
This is a well deserved endorsement.  I think the UAW still carries a lot of clout and this endorsement will likely push Bernero to the head of the pack in the next few polls.

AFL-CIO is rumored to prefer Kildee.  The trade unions and possibly Teamsters may go with Dillon.  Can Alma Wheeler Smith count on her solid voting record to result in endorsements from the public sector unions?

The conventional wisdom dismisses Alma Wheeler Smith as a serious candidate.  But given that she is the only woman and only person of color running for governor, I think she has a lot going for her.

can we all chip in ten bucks (0.00 / 0)
and get Skoop a copy editor?

or at least someone to tell him when words don't exist, like "mando."

it'd be a shocker if virg didn't get the UAW nod. he's been applying for it since nov of 08, and he's really done more on tv to defend the UAW than anyone in the race.

alma needs to have money to be taken seriously. as progressive as her politics can be, it's really hard to support or respect a candidate who doesn't seem to want to raise money.

brady, do you think the unions will coalesce behind one candidate or split three (maybe four) ways?

Split (0.00 / 0)
Well given that it appears very likly that Bernero will get UAW and Dillon has trade union support, I guess the question is whether Kildee has a shot at picking up some of the public sector unions.  I think he does.  Kildee appears to be a very solid candidate.  It looks like we're going to have a primaries on both sides with four candidates in each party who are likely to end up with double digit percentages.

That's part of the charm (0.00 / 0)
I used to have to format Skubick's columns for our editorial page.  It was no better. I realize it drives some people around the bend, but I like the unvarnished feel to it.

Don't Bet On it Brady (4.00 / 1)
As much as Dillon would love to have a lot of Democrats splitting the vote it ain't gonna happen.  Count on it.

"Anyway, the interesting thing will be to see what electoral juice the UAW really still has.  As the number of AW's have contracted"

It's important to remember that the UAW's clout doesn't just come from current autoworkers but also from its retirees.

2008 (0.00 / 0)
I was talking to a campaign volunteer in 2008 who got sent to Flint.  They wound up going to the local union hall to find out what to do, and found the place basically deserted.  All the action was over at the Obama office.

I'm very curious to see whether that was a one-time thing or whether that was the start of something.

OFA endorsements? (0.00 / 0)
Does anyone know if OFA will be endorsing local candidates?  Will OFA put their network of donors/volunteers to work for specific candidates, or does it exist purely for Obama's benefit?

This is now a race between the predictable centrist reformer and the unpredictable populist reformer.

What has Dillon reformed? (4.00 / 1)
You can't call yourself a reformer unless you can point to some success reforming something.
