My Dinner with Stabenow, Dillon, Bernero, and more!

by: Butch Snider

Fri Mar 05, 2010 at 23:47:00 PM EST

(From the diaries! - promoted by Eric B.)

Tonight was the 32nd Annual Ingham County Democratic Mardi Gras Fundraiser.  My wife and I attended along with several others.  The guest list included U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, State House Speaker Andy Dillon, State Representative Alma Wheeler Smith, Wayne State University Professor Jocelyn Benson, Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton and many, many others.  Heck, just sitting at our table we had as our dining companions Ingham County Commissioner Todd Tennis, East Lansing City Council Member Nathan Triplett, Delhi Charter Township Clerk Evan Hope and their guests, and oh yes, Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer was also there.  And that was just our table!

The emcee of the evening was former State Representative Lynn Jondahl, who was engaging and humorous as always, especially when he introduced "Grandma" Stabenow.  Jondahl also recounted how at past Mardi Gars dinners he performed with the future senator as part of a group called "Debbie and the Dips", and somehow he wound up as one of the Dips.  The Honorable Debbie Stabenow received not one, not two, but three standing ovations, bringing the room to its feet with rousing anecdotes and fighting words from her political past and present.  I appreciated her discussion of today being the anniversary of the creation of the filibuster and how it is being abused by the U.S. Senate Republican Minority Caucus.

The gubernatorial candidates all spoke briefly, then made the rounds of the room.  Of particular note was when Speaker Dillon turned to Mayor Bernero and said "And one of us will win in November!"  (Representative Wheeler Smith had not yet arrived.)  My wife and I did note that though the candidates for governor talked to the elected officials and state party chairmen at out table, they skipped over us, with the sole exception of Representative Wheeler Smith, who very politely requested our support.

My wife did say that if Mayor Bernero had approached us, she would have brought up the subject of handicap parking in downtown Lansing.  Although federal law required that the parking lot at the new Michigan State Police HQ have handicapped parking, official MSP policy states that the lot at that building is for state-owned vehicles only, and the handicapped employees are not allowed to use the handicapped parking spaces at the building!

(Speaking of my wife, she also wanted me to note here that she did not care for the food this year.)

It was always good to see our progressive activist friends, both those from Ingham County and those from elsewhere.  MichLib poster "Progressive Female" and I had an enjoyable discussion with Eaton County state representative candidate Fred Fry.  I was able to offer a belated in-person congratulation to activist-turned-Ingham County Commissioner-elect Penelope Tsernoglou.  And we were glad to help raise funds for our favorite county party.

Penelope's win deserves attention. (4.00 / 2)
She won a special primary election (there's no Republican on the ballot anyway) against two-time Congressional candidate Bob Alexander.  She out-hustled, out-spent, out-organized, and generally out-ran him, 492-to-470.

Critical to her win was an 87-to-0 win in the precinct that includes the Brody residence halls on the MSU campus.  She took a lot of my advice, but she ignored me when I told her not to bother, because it was hopeless.

Butch, just so you know, your wife would have made off just as nicely to talk to any of the other candidates concerning the MSP HQ lot -- and probably even better if she'd have talked to Dillon or Smith since they are current legislators -- because Virg had little to do with this since it was a state project worked out between the developer and the state.  Of the three candidates, the two legislatures easily had more to say about the actual designing of the property than our mayor ever did.

BTW, the parking situation of this has always been a major bone of contention even for those of us who supported the project.  The city plans to construct a parking garage across Kalamazoo in the not-too-distant future to help solve the parking problem in southern downtown.

MSP HQ Parking (0.00 / 0)
I know parking inside the MSP HQ lot is a state issue, not a city one.  My wife was specifically referring to the fact that there are no handicapped parking spots just outside the new HQ property.  And I know parking was the least of everyone's concern with the new building, but isn't it crazy that federal law requires handicapped parking but state policy says no one can use it?
