by: Eric B.

Connie Saltonstall, the former Charlevoix county commissioner who is challenging  Bart Stupak for the Democratic nomination in the 1st District will be on Crooks and Liars tomorrow at 3 p.m. for an online townhall with a few prominent national-level progressive bloggers. And, Democracy for America has launched a national initiative called Primaries Matter, with the 1st on of the featured races where members can vote.

Bart and his C Street buddies are probably gathering for a prayer breakfast.

I'm going to sit back an enjoy this race (0.00 / 0)
I'll bet a six pack of Michigan Brewing beer that a democrat from one of the Lake Michigan coastal towns (Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Torch Lake) has no chance to win a congressional seat this November.

With that in mind, I hope Saltonstall beats Stupak.

Mother Baerren didn't raise her children to take foolish bets (0.00 / 0)
If I didn't believe in hedging my bets, I'd say that a Democrat from one of the Lake Michigan coastal towns doesn't have a shot at beating Bart Stupak in the primary ... let alone winning in November.

Why (0.00 / 0)
Why would it matter where the challenger is from?  This district is really quite homogenous within its two sections (i.e. Northern Michigan & the UP).  What difference do you see between a coastal town and an inland one?  This isn't like downstate where you have this huge cultural and political divide between city/suburbs and the rural areas.  There are no large metropolitan areas up-state.

Northern Michigan (4.00 / 1)
Northern Michigan politics doesn't work like that.  Stupak's district is far from homogenous.  Culturally and politically, it's split into four distinct sections:  the eastern UP, the western UP, Northeast Michigan, and a small slice of northwest Michigan coastal counties.  Saltonstall is from the last portion which has the least amount of people and is the most Republican.

Northern Michigan (4.00 / 1)
If you were to take a trip up north and spend the weekend touring just the coastal towns of this Lower Peninsula portion of this district, you'd get a very distinct sense of cultural differences.  Charlevoix, but even more so Petoskey and Harbor Beach, are a lot more like Traverse City and to a lesser extent Manistee; Tawas and Alpena are a lot more like ... well ... Cadillac (which, off the top of my head, might be in Dave Camp's district, but it's the same basic bear) and Gaylord.  Also, Gladwin (which is somewhere near the border of the 1st and 4th) was also home a few years back to the only shortwave radio antenna in the state that carried the Alex Jones show.  The Lake Michigan coast gave us Michelle McManus and the Michigan Land Use Institute.  There's obviously overlap, but there are also fairly clear, noticeable distinctions.
