In which Brady screws up royally

by: Michigan Awesome

Mon Jul 12, 2010 at 21:38:59 PM EDT

On July 8, MSURyanJ posted an ironically-titled diary attacking the Bernero ad being run by the Genesee County Democratic Committee. Of course, as is par for the course, MSURyanJ went after the Bernero campaign for the ad, when it was independently produced by the Genesee Dems.

In the same thread, Brady decided to participate in a little race-baiting while on the taxpayers' dime...

Michigan Awesome :: In which Brady screws up royally

First, Brady opened it up with quite the revelation:

 Malik Shabazz (0.00 / 0)

Those Bernero endorsements include Minister Malik Shabazz of the new Black Panther Party.  Shabazz is listed as the head of the Detroit Chapter of the Black Panthers, which is listed a hate group by the anti-defimation league and the Southern Poverty Law Center.  Shabazz is a strong supporter of the segregation of all races.  While I can't speak for the Dillon campaign, I would hope he would decline that one.

You ask some fine questions and I'll do my best to answer them later.

After EricB called out Brady for this "meaningless" revelation, MSURyanJ followed up with this gem:

Meaningless? (0.00 / 0)

Accepting the endorsement of someone that has praised the actions of Osama Bin Laden and advocated killing white police officers is "meaningless"??

If nothing else, it shows either bad judgment or careless campaigning.

Here's his entry on the Anti-Defamation League's website:
http://www.adl.org/learn/ext_u...

MSURyanJ also posted this big "find" on the Great Orange Satan.

Here's Brady again:

Detroit endorsements (0.00 / 0)

Dillon is endorsed by Buzz Thomas, Charles Pugh and Dennis Archer.  Bernero counters with Kwame's mom, Monica's husband and the head of a ADL & SPLC designated hate group.  A cognent argument shouldn't be necessary to explain why these endorsements are meaningful.

 And AGAIN:

Race baiting (0.00 / 0)
Yvette, I guarantee you that if Bernero or Dillon were to accept and publish the endorsement of a white or Latino advocating racial segregation through violent means, my reaction would be the same.  It's not Malik Shabazz's race that's the issue, it's what he stands for.  It's way beyond anything Jeremiah Wright advocated.
And here he is once more, in quite the condescending tone, I may add:

Yvette, dear... (0.00 / 0)
Every single person mentioned as endorsing Dillon above is also a black person.  You're right that Malik Shabazz is free to endorse whoever he wants.  If the Bernero campaign were to ignore it, few would know about it.  But instead, they're publicizing it.  If Leon Drolet were to come on MichLib and endorse Bernero due to Bernero's commitment not to raise taxes as governor, we'd be laughing about it.  If Bernero were to announce the endorsement in a press release, it would be a whole different matter.  And calling attention to Drolet's hypothetical endorsment of Bernero would be no more gay-bashing than calling attention to the Shabazz endorsement is race-baiting.  Publishing the Shabazz endorsement is a major blunder by the Bernero campaign on par with accepting Moroun's money and then opposing DRIC.

On a lighter note, I suspect your $0.02 about protecting my reputation here is two cents too generous and two years too late.  ;)

Now, there is just one problem with all of this: Brady and MSURyanJ had the WRONG MAN. From Michigan Messenger (which initially made the same mistake):

A post at DailyKos confuses Minister Malik Shabazz of Detroit with Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther Party and Black Lawyers for Justice. They are not the same person. Malik Zulu Shabazz has claimed that 9/11 was an attack by Jews and even more controversial things. Minister Malik Shabazz of Detroit is not responsible for those things.

And MIRS reported tonight:

Another endorsement the Bernero camp rolled out this weekend was that of Malik SHABAZZ, of the New Marcus Garvey Movement/Black Panther Nation. The campaign notes that Shabazz is a Detroit community activist -- and not to be confused with the controversial New National Black Panther Party President Malik Zulu SHABAZZ who has made a number of controversial remarks.

So here's the question: Is the Dillon campaign directing Brady to engage in these Clintonian Jeramiah Wright-style race baiting? Or is he doing this on his own accord? Here's a clue from Dillon spokesman T.J. Buckholz (from the same Michigan Messenger article):

One of his opponents has already weighed in. TJ Bucholz, spokesman for Andy Dillon, told the Messenger, “This endorsement… shows a serious lapse in judgment.”

Seems pretty coordinated to me.

Regardless, I am calling on Brady and MSURyanJ to apologize for these tactics, and also admit they can't keep their African American leaders straight.

Nice try, but.. (4.00 / 1)
There were a number of sites making the same mixup today, as there are two Malik Shabazz both affiliated with the black panthers, but the reality is, the "correct" Malik Shabazz has some radical views of his own, as Michigan Messenger reported:

What he wants, ultimately, are separate societies, segregated on the basis of skin color. Whites here, blacks there, brown-skinned, red-skinned and yellow-skinned people there, there and there, each in control of their own pieces of real estate.

To achieve that, he says, the white capitalist power structures of the West must be eliminated. And if this vision is ever realized, it won't be through peaceful means. Forget about the nonviolent civil disobedience of Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King.

"I love Dr. King," Shabazz says, "but I'm not going to get beat up to share a toilet with anyone."

The changes Shabazz wants, he says, will only come through armed insurrection. "Huey Newton said power flows through the barrel of a gun," Shabazz says, invoking the name of one of the original Black Panthers. "We plan to make changes the same way George Washington did, the same way any oppressed people get power."

He refuses to discuss or even acknowledge any specific plans for revolution, nor will he disclose what kind of weaponry his group has, though he does admit that they're often armed and can shift from "Martin Luther King mode" to "Malcolm X mode" at any time.

So, yes, it was a mistake in identity, but Bernero's campaign later backtracked on the endorsement and tried claiming it was an accident and never should have been included in their press release.  So, apparently they agreed that he's not exactly the kind of "leader" (to use your words) you'd want endorsing your campaign.

Bernero endorsing Malik Shabazz (0.00 / 0)
As I indicated in the other thread with the link to the article, Detroit's Malik Shabazz, who endorsed Bernero is the person under discussion.  He was already well known in Michigan politics prior to Bernero's crew putting out its press release and now trying to bury its major blunder.  Name recognition being what it is, publishing the Malik Shabazz endorsement will actually likely be less damaging to Bernero than the Kilpatrick and Conyers endorsements.

For background on the Bernero endorsing Malik Shabazz, please see:  http://www.metrotimes.com/edit...

Lame, lame, lame, lame, lame. (4.00 / 4)
Now, you're attempting to turn this all around, to really make this about Bernero endorsing Malik Shabazz, as if mentioning that he'd received that guy's endorsement somehow signals that Bernero actually endorses the things he says.

Worst. Argument. Ever.

In the past 48 hours... (1.00 / 3)
In the past 48 hours, the Bernero campaign has done as much as it could to lose the Detroit vote and much of the Metro area.  It's comical they keep fighting it.  At the same time, Dillon along with Archer, Pugh and Buzz Thomas have shown what it takes to beat someone like Cox in SE Michigan.

[ Parent ]
Awful. Just awful. (4.00 / 2)
I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you probably don't have the slightest idea what might cause one candidate or the next to "lose the Detroit vote" and that your continued advocacy in this regard is really just you, spouting off in ways that have come to define the discourse of the political press ... a discourse that has basically lost all relevancy with regular people.

I mean, in a different thread, someone from that area told you to knock if off because you were being offensive, and you responded with a condescending lecture about how wrong she is. And, what has Buzz Thomas done in the last 48 hours to show that Andy Dillon can beat Mike Cox in SE Michigan?

As the saying goes, "People in glass houses..." (0.00 / 0)
As Brady's former boss, Sheltrown #1 (former State Representative Dale Sheltrown), has also endorsed Virg Bernero for Governor, I would say that Shabazz, Kilpatrick, and Conyers are in excellent company.

[ Parent ]
He's a nut (4.00 / 1)
I had the displeasure of becoming aware of Mr. Shabazz when I was a student at Wayne State.  He may not go quite to the extremes of this other person with the same name apparently, but his speech is just as full of hate.

I was sad to hear some of his beliefs back in school, and I'd be pretty surprised if ANY candidate would want his endorsement.

And let's not start accusing people of race bating.  Hate speech is hate speech, no matter who is saying it.

No one is defending hate speech. (4.00 / 1)
What people are saying is that yelling about an endorsement from someone who has potentially engaged in hate speech is a bullshit campaign issue.

Isn't there..... (4.00 / 2)
some sort of blogger etiquette against calling people out in diaries?

You may be right, but... (2.50 / 2)
It's fun to see two anonymous blog accounts created at MichLib within the past few weeks whose primary objective has been to counter my posts and belittle me, something that Eric B. and Nazgul already do an excellent job of.

[ Parent ]
I don't belittle you, I belittle your arguments... (4.00 / 1)
It's not a terribly difficult job, either, since your arguments were never that large in the first place.

Also, stop trying to play the victim card.  You rise and fall based on the strength of your arguments. Make a real argument, rather than pretending that something that no one cares about is important, and I'll stop belittling them.

No. (4.00 / 1)
I was reading a piece by Mencken on professions and journalism. One of the things he said was stupid was that while the journals of most professions are filled with examples of calling each other out, journalists don't do that.  I think it's good reasoning, frankly, and if we're going to call out people like Nolan Finley, Magic Frank, and the Raging Dullard, we ought to apply the same standards to ourselves.

Maybe when I get a paycheck for blogging..... (2.50 / 2)
they can hold me to the same standard.

[ Parent ]
This is why people don't take bloggers seriously... (4.00 / 3)
When people say that bloggers want to be treated with kid gloves while attacking others relentlessly, this is what they mean. You either accept treatment as you treat others, or no one takes you seriously.

This is politics, first of all, which means that it's a rough business.  That goes double in primary season.  But, it's also a world where you stand or fall based on the strength of your argument.

There are lots of entirely appropriate reasons to call out fellow bloggers in diaries.  The fear of being accused of selling this site's loyalties, for instance, heavily influence the way I handle the sponsorship program.  I tell our readership up front who's paying the bills, and I tell the sponsor that their access to posting in no way expands as a result of their financial support (it exists in an already highly liberal state) and that I won't personally write things because they've slipped a few bucks for the maintenance of this site.

Also, keep in mind that this is a two-way door.  A few years ago, for instance, Michigan Messenger did a story about how people were upset that we sold an ad to an anti-labor group.  Our policy is today what it was then ... we make no editorial judgments on who wants to buy an ad because I think the firewall between finances and editorial content ought to be thick and hot.  But, the crux of their story was that a few other bloggers around the state were angry about it and yanked mutual links as a result.  So, this site in general and me specifically got called out by people who wanted to make it an issue.  Frankly, I welcomed it and the opportunity to defend policies I was responsible for.

I guess you're entitled to adopt whatever "blogging code" you feel best fits you.  Based on the rationale you've provided, however, I don't feel that what you've suggested is in this site's best long-term interests.

Thanks... (4.00 / 1)
One of those criticisms aimed at the "blogosphere" since it's early days is that it doesn't apply any standards to itself.  Bloggers said, "Well, it's self-correcting, because peddlers of bullshit will get called out." It's now apparent to me that it's wrong to call out people who peddle bullshit.

Among the Trees

[ Parent ]
... (4.00 / 1)
Yes.

It seems that djtyg's logical stream ends with Brady shouldn't be called out for peddling bullshit because he doesn't get paid to be a blogger...

Well, if that's the case, I'd like to remind djtyg that Brady does, in fact, get paid to be a blogger -- the taxpayers pay him to do it.

It's completely unfair for djtyg or others to relentlessly rip on the "establishment" and then cry foul when another blogger or an "establishment" media figure does the same to them.

[ Parent ]
No, that wasn't what I was saying. (4.00 / 1)
I thought there was always a rule about calling people out in the diary title.  Yes, I know, I didn't mention a title in the first post, and that's probably why a lot of assumptions (like me not taking blogging seriously) were made.  I made the mistake of thinking people would know I was talking about the title.  I wish that people who have read the work I've put out over the past four years wouldn't assume that I don't take blogging seriously, though.  My work should make it obvious that I do.

I wasn't saying that you shouldn't fact-check somebody.  If it came across that way, I apologize.  I was just bringing up an age-old idea about diary titles.

As for media figures attacking the blog, I've knuckled up against certain people in the media lots of times when this blog was attacked.  I've never been attacked by them myself, but have come to the defense of ML.

I'm just frustrated that after all the years of blogging it just feels like things either stay the same or get worse.

People don't take us seriously.... (0.00 / 0)
precisely because we're not getting paid for this.  We're not part of the "establishment", and if you're not part of it, no one gives a fuck about you.  The bottom line is that we have no ability to influence decision making in Lansing.

I couldn't care less about how you do your advertising.  As for the site's best long-term interest, the Michigan Blogosphere is dying.  All the old bloggers keep going off to bigger and better things, and there's not enough people to replace them.  Which doesn't surprise me, since we can't make a living off of ideals and rants.

They never will, either, so who cares?

It's as simple as that.

Among the Trees

[ Parent ]
No (0.00 / 0)
The "establishment" really, really doesn't take him seriously.

[ Parent ]
Well, you have it 100 percent wrong (4.00 / 3)
The "establishment" isn't the culprit here.  The culprit is your own hubris, which told you that all you needed to do was show up and the world would throw open its gates.  Well, that's not how the world works. The "establishment" doesn't give a fuck about you because you've basically said that until the "establishment" gives you money, you don't plan to do anything for the "establishment" to take you seriously.  The world is not obligated to take you seriously, and when you come to it saying that you have no intention to do things with a basic sense of logic and consistency in your approach, you've given the world all the reason it needs not to.

I can speak with some authority on this, by the way, since I do get some money to do this (I could get more if I really wanted to put the time into it) and because to the extent that issuing a press release calling someone a criminal is a sign that someone takes you seriously, at least the Michigan Republican Party takes this site seriously (or at least me).

As for this site, it is not the "Michigan blogosphere."  What other people do in their careers or with their Web sites is not my concern; and despite your dire claims, this site is not dying. To the contrary, in fact. Our readership continues to grow, and I see influence from the content posted here reflected in news outlets and press releases across the state.

How is this site so lucky? To a large degree because of those standards you don't care about. Selah.

Among the Trees

[ Parent ]
Two things.... (4.00 / 1)
1.  When did I say this?
The "establishment" doesn't give a fuck about you because you've basically said that until the "establishment" gives you money, you don't plan to do anything for the "establishment" to take you seriously.

or this

The world is not obligated to take you seriously, and when you come to it saying that you have no intention to do things with a basic sense of logic and consistency in your approach, you've given the world all the reason it needs not to.

I never said I don't work to be taken seriously.  What I said was that if someone wants to compare me to a reporter, they should pay me like one.

But if you care to show me what major policy initiative in this state we got passed in the past few years, I'll be more than happy to hear about it.  But I haven't seen anything being done because we somehow influenced it.

2.  Why bug crawled up your ass?  This isn't a personal attack on you, Eric, so quit being so defensive.  The reality is that there aren't as many people writing as there was in 2006.  Your front page shows 11 out of 15 stories written by yourself alone.  It used to be much more diverse.  And no, it's not because of you.

I don't know why you've taken this as some sort of attack on your blog.  It's not.  And you can quit putting words in my mouth.

[ Parent ]
... (0.00 / 0)
I'm going to answer question number 2 first by politely telling you to go stuff it.  I don't put up with the myriad small tasks of keeping this site operational -- fixing technical glitches (where the hell were you when Google broke our feeds back in December?), correcting problems in peoples' accounts, dealing with legal issues (all of which have involved the conduct of other people), clearing out spam accounts, and (biggest) making sure this site's bills get paid even if it means ponying up my own cash -- only to have you parachute in once in awhile to lecture me on how to behave here.  Seriously, if you intend to argue this thing out until you can get the final word, drop this line because it won't end well for you.

As to 1., you said as such all over this thread.  You have no intention of living up to standards you apply to others who get paid until you get a paycheck. That's precisely why you'll never get a paycheck.

[ Parent ]
I don't consider this a waste of time (0.00 / 0)
People always mistake a string of comments for an investment of real time.  Not the case ... I probably spent more time yesterday fretting over my compost than I did on this.

But, to the meat of the issue ... dude pops in and tells people how to behave, insults the effort I've put into this site, and then gets mad when I tell him that he's being disrespectful.  Then, despite the fact that I've met him exactly once (and never had a one-on-one conversation) says that I've offended a long-term personal relationship between us.

I've let this stuff go in the past, such as when he's ordered me not to get into fights with other blogs (anyone who actually knows me could tell you that nothing could interest me less), and unfortunately he's been around long enough that people think that it carries the weight of both of us knowing each other from way back when. So, I'd prefer it to just stop.

Being taken seriously (4.00 / 1)
Politicians are narcissists, much more so than most people.  Any media that mentions them, whether it is Skubik, Susan, MichLib and even Facebook comments will have relevancy in their eyes.  The term "take seriously" is subjective, especially in a culture where adults from professional backgrounds engage in behavior (watch the debates) that would be socially unacceptable in most other situations.  The value of a story Skubik writes or a comment you make isn't based on how serious it is but instead on the notice people give it and the mental and emotional reaction it inspires.  I have seen numerous examples of "establishment" media taking stories from this blog and legislators taking cues from MichLib on legislation.

Bernero deletes Shabazz (0.00 / 0)
Bernero's campaign has deleted mention of the Malik Shabazz endorsement from yesterday's press release on its website.  It was a smart PR move by the Bernero campaign to end this issue quickly by admitting the mistake rather than having it continue to play out.

So what? (4.00 / 2)
No one cared about this in the first place, no one cares about it now, and no one would have cared about it had they not done this.  You've spent the last day trying to turn a trivial molehill into a referendum on the entire campaign.

Bacon & DRIC (0.00 / 0)
He made bacon out of Mr. Perks, putting an end to the quarter century old legend that legislators who support general revenue would get recalled and significantly lessening the level of cuts that would have been necessary in the current and two previous budgets.

He was able to get DRIC passed in the House this summer despite very agressive lobbying against it by DRIC opponents.

DRIC is not law; surviving recall is not a qualification for governor (4.00 / 2)
I mean, this is how low a bar you've set ... you think Dillon ought to be governor because he shepherded a bill through a chamber he runs. I would argue that if Dillon couldn't do that, he's not qualified to be House Speaker.

And, surviving recall is now a qualification for governor? Good gravy, man.
