A Lansing Resident's Take on Bernero

by: HeatherH

Sun Jul 18, 2010 at 13:48:05 PM EDT

(Promoted for quality of argument. - promoted by Eric B.)

I know there have been a lot of posts here already advocating the pros and cons of both Andy Dillon and Virg Bernero.  To be honest, I know little about Dillon, but I have learned quite a bit about Bernero as a resident of Lansing and dealing with him as our Mayor.

Unfortunately, my experiences with him aren't good.  I've never been one to get actively involved in local politics until an issue came up a couple of years ago involving Lansing's munical golf courses.  I live right next to one of them, a very nice course that our community was always proud of.  It was kept up well, was a nice "gateway" to Lansing coming from one of the major roads going into the city, and best of all, the course was self sustaining.  It, barring unforseen expenses, paid for itself.

HeatherH :: A Lansing Resident's Take on Bernero

Seemingly out of the blue, Bernero decided it was "too costly" for the city to maintain our course, as well as another of the city's 3 courses, and that they needed to close them down.  Our neighborhood fought back, raising questions about how it could be too costly when it had always been said the courses more or less maintained themselves (the city budget had to allocate some money each year for the operation of the courses, but then that money would be put back in the city coffers through the profits from the courses charging their fees to play)

We asked to meet with the Mayor to discuss what would become of the course if it were to close, as we didn't want it to just sit vacant.  He refused.  We talked to City Council members, and they assured us the courses would remain open and they would make sure the funds to open the courses were part of the budget as usual.  They followed through on their end, and the budget was passed with the usual allocations for all 3 courses.

Bernero responded by ordering his city employees not to open the courses, so we were left in this limbo where the courses all SHOULD have been open as usual, but because of Bernero stomping his feet on the issue, 2 of the 3 remained closed.  We again asked to meet with the Mayor, and again were refused.  The City Council responded by suing the Mayor saying that he had an obligation to let the courses open since money was there and he was acting illegally by not following through on the city's budget allocation.  He fought it, so we then had the city suing itself and wasting all sorts of taxpayer money.

To make a long story short, to this day, the courses remain closed.  They are completely unkept, the grass is about 4 feet high at the moment, weeds growing everywhere, and look terrible.  Anytime we have friends come in from out of town, they ask what in the world that fenced in area is across the street, and ask if it's a contaminated hazard or something.  I explain that it's supposed to be a golf course, but our Mayor left us with that instead.

To this day I have no idea why Bernero did what he did.  If it was truly a budget issue, I could understand, but it wasn't.  I could maybe even understand it if Bernero had a plan to reuse the 2 sites for something, had a deal in place to sell them to a developer or something, but he didn't.  They just sit there, driving down our property values, and being an eyesore on the community.

So, when I hear other stories about the Mayor being rude, argumentative, and refusing to work with others, I believe them.  It's how he treated my neighbors and I.

I don't know much about Dillon, like I said, but I know that Bernero has no business even thinking about being Governor.  He won't work with the city council now, I can't imagine how poorly he'd work with the state legislature.

Anyway, I just wanted to offer my two cents.  I've read lots of arguements about the two candidates on here, but most of them were focused on one issue or another.  This isn't about an issue, just about the person himself and his track record as Mayor of Lansing.  I don't know if it will change any minds or not, but I felt it was worth saying, and I know I'm not the only one here in Lansing that feels this way.

Golf Courses (0.00 / 0)
I always drive by the Grand River golf course and it is just so sad to see it look the way that it does. It just really worries me, as someone still deciding who I am going to vote for, that Bernero didn't have any plan for the courses before closing them. I can only hope that something will be done with them soon to clean up the appearance.

Who cares about a GD golf course? Seriously, people.

My impression at the time (4.00 / 2)
was that the golf courses were not self-sustaining, and that was the reason for the closings. Do you have any links (no pun intended) to numbers and costs?

And BTW (4.00 / 2)
I know enough about Dillon to know I don't want a closet Republican as my governor.

Go Virg!

Quality of Argument? (4.00 / 1)
What in the world are you talking about?  The only fact in this ridiculous rant is that the two golf courses are actually closed.  They were not "self-sustaining" - they were losing money hand over fist and Lansing taxpayers were footing the bill.  The City Council never sued Bernero - they didn't have the guts or the votes to do it. "If it was truly a budget issue, I could understand, but it wasn't."  Totally false.  Of course it was a budget issue.  You would have to be living under a rock not to be aware of the massive budget deficits of the past few years.  The only real question is do you prefer police on the streets or subsidizing golf for the few people who actually used the courses?  There are plenty of private golf courses around the Lansing area and golf as a sport has been in decline for years, which is a big reason why they were losing money year after year.  If this lady's idiotic post constitutes "quality of argument", Eric, I have to wonder about your quality of judgement.

This, coming from a person who uses a pseudonym? (4.00 / 2)
The whole point of blogging is to allow different viewpoints.  This is clearly about responsive government, not golf course, and it's frankly something I've heard from people I know who live in Lansing and aren't connected to politics.  And, frankly, if I'm going to shoot my mouth off about Andy Dillon's lousy tenure as House Speaker, there's space for someone to shoot their mouth off about what they perceive as Virg Bernero's lousy tenure as mayor.

Golf Courses and budget (4.00 / 1)
This post was the first time I've heard any suggestion that the golf courses were paying for themselves.  (There were suggestions that they could, under certain conditions, but I don't remember any claims that they actually did.)  The city counsel wanted to find the money to keep them open; they didn't argue that no money was needed.

[ Parent ]
My recollection... (4.00 / 1)
...was that the council DID find the money and put it in the budget, but Bernero still told his people not to open the courses.

And I think what the original post is suggesting is that the city had to lay out the money at the beginning of each year, but then the money the courses brought in from people playing on it went back to the city and more or less broke even by the end of the season.  That too sounds like what I remember being said at the time, but I didn't follow the issue all THAT closely to be honest.

Living in nearby East Lansing, I can certainly attest to the fact that the 2 closed courses look terrible now though.  I don't know why they don't keep them up a bit better and use them as parks, or disc golf or SOMEthing.  But they just sit there.  The one course on the border of Lansing & East Lansing wasn't supposed to be a particularly nice course, but always had a lot of people playing there when I'd drive by.  The other course on the westside of town was supposed to be quite nice from what I heard from friends who golf.

You see, I heard something different (0.00 / 0)
...or read it, maybe in the LSJ or something.

But, the point isn't golf courses, but about responsive government.

I don't live in Lansing, so I'm in no position to judge whether the Bernero administration is responsive to constituents.  So, I have to leave that up to the citizens of Lansing, who might use this Web site to offer their opinions in that regard.

Balancing a Budget (0.00 / 0)
Virg has the experience to balance a budget and proven to do so. If Speaker Dillon would not have cut revenue sharing, the City of Lansing and every municipality in Michigan wouldn't have had to layoff, close facilities, or reduce spending. But I will say, we are still enjoying Reagan's trickle down economy. Cut taxes for the wealthy, the same time spend $1 trillion on a war and abandon Korea as they have no oil, spend a majority of the military budget on your conservative business friends, Eric Princ a.k.a. DeVoss, INC. and other private militia organizations not excluding Cheney's Halliburton, yes we are living the dream! ARE YOU BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE 10 YEARS AGO! ARE YOU PUNK!
