Gongwer: It's Brenda Lawrence

by: PerfectStormer

Fri Aug 27, 2010 at 14:15:05 PM EDT

Aaaaaand the first-place prize in the "Guess Virg Bernero's Running Mate" contest goes to our own yvette248 for her correct guess of Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence. Gongwer is reporting (and Twitter is, um, atwitter) that Mayor Bernero will make his announcement at 9:30AM tomorrow at the MDP convention.

If you're the kind of person who doesn't trust those shady blogs and wants perspective from the Real Media, here's an article from the Freep. It says pretty much what I'm about to say here.

<dons Captain Obvious hat>

  • She's mayor of Southfield and has been since 2001.

  • She's from southeast Michigan.

  • She's African-American.

  • She's female.

  • Mayor Bernero is none of these things.
  • <doffs Captain Obvious hat>

    If anyone needs me... (4.00 / 4)
...I'll be in the corner, clutching my "Gays for Gretchen" tee shirt and weeping.

I'm kidding. I think Brenda Lawrence is an inspired choice. She has a great reputation even over here on the west side, and she brings constituencies to the table that Virg doesn't. Good call, Mr. Mayor.

    GREAT pick! (4.00 / 3)
As a Democratic Party we have an embarrassment of riches. It would've been hard for Bernero to pick a bad candidate. Even so, the Bernero-Lawrence ticket is a home run! As a dynamic, well-respected leader, she will bring a lot to the state as its Lieutenant Governor, and is more than prepared (and certainly more ready than Calley!) to be Governor if need be.

People can talk all they want about balance, but Granholm's LG is of the same race and almost the same region as she is, and that didn't hurt!

Bernero needed to pick the person who would be most capable of filling in as Governor if needed. That,

Great Lakes, Great Times, Great Scott

Let me try that again, starting with the last line: (4.00 / 3)
Bernero needed to pick the person who would be most capable of filling in as Governor if needed. That, he did. So what if Lawrence happens to be a black woman? Black women are just as qualified to lead as anyone else! (And if Virg really wanted balance, why would he pick another mayor?)

    Congratulations, Lt. Gov. Brenda Lawrence!

    So happy for Brenda! (4.00 / 4)
As someone who volunteered to help Brenda run for OC Exec, I quickly became impressed with her grasp of economic issues, common-sense, and accessibility to regular people. She's "bright, clean and articulate" and those who think she's just an appeasement for the black vote are in for a surprise.

And for the record, I would have been just as happy with Alma Wheeler Smith, but was unimpressed with the rest of the candidate pool. I think Brenda helps him with women, young people, Oakland County and Detroit and was a very smart choice.

Nothing is easier than solving a problem on the back of the poor. People who don't have lobbyists or clout.

WOOD TV8 on this and other other political news. (4.00 / 2)

Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence is expected to be Virg Bernero's running mate for governor.
I find it reassuring that we Democrats seem to have things under control at our state convention, while the Republicans definitely don't.

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!

Why do you say "Mayor Bernero is none of these things"? (4.00 / 1)
He's from Oakland County, isn't he?  Has family there.  Learned politics and ran his first campaigns there.

He's only been in Lansing for a couple decades.

Bernero not from SE Michigan? (4.00 / 1)
I thought his most recent non-government job was heading up an advocacy group that was based in Southfield.

    Also, he is a Mayor (0.00 / 0)
Though not from Southfield. Can't think of many cities with more than one mayor.

    Brenda Lawrence (0.00 / 0)
I understand the desire to have a Black female on the ticket but as a Southfield resident I may sit this election out.  Brenda Lawrence has been an ineffective mayor for this city which is why she lost her bid for Oakland County Executive. The fact that she's been mayor of Southfield since 2001 is not because she's so great, it because there has been a lack of candidates with talent & skills to move this city ahead. The city has lost so many residents because of the number of foreclosures and high tax base many people are disheartened and do not participate in local elections feeling the known was better than the unknown. We actually were hoping she would have won the Oakland County Executive position just so she would be gone.
