Dan Benishek and the War on Drugs

by: Eric B.

Wed Sep 15, 2010 at 14:48:16 PM EDT

Bart Stupak Gary McDowell's people are circulating a link to video they say is of Dan Benishek saying that the federal government should not take part in the War on Drugs.

The clip starts with whoever it is saying that they don't know that it is Constitutionally valid (like them or not, the War on Drugs has been upheld as Constitutionally valid by the Supreme Court in no end to cases ... including when states sued the Bush administration over John Ashcroft's raids on medical marijuana dispensaries).

Update! ... The video, in fact, comes to us from Gary McDowell's people.  Originally, I thought the video had come from Bart Stupak's re-election campaign.  This might prompt you to ask how I could think that Bart Stupak was making comments in support of a Democrat running to replace Stupak in Congress while also running for re-election. My explanation is that I was working outside, in the direct sun, when I posted this and was also highly concerned about the possible fallout from an event nearby where they were giving out free pizza. Now that I am inside, and having wasted the afternoon reading things on the Internet I've already read several dozen times, my head has let out some of the accumulated heat and I am able to easily make out my error. I am tempted to apologize for any inconvenience this mistake might have caused, but I quite frankly don't care.

I don't get it...
This is showing opposition in a bad light?  I agree on a bunch of points (we may not agree on how it should change, but that's not being debated).

Because the War on Drugs has failed.  Whether it's constitutionally valid is beside the point in my opinion, it's a worthless drain on resources.  See this link:

The Morning Sun: Police Confiscate Marijuana Plants

BAYONET found ~4200 plants, growing outside, by sending a helicopter around looking from the air.  How much did that cost?  Well, from a pot smoker's perspective, thanks BAYONET for keeping the shwag ditch weed off the market!  It's worth every penny.

This is just putting numbers out there to justify the millions upon millions of dollars spent on drug enforcement.  It makes conservatives happy and feel big and tough.

Meanwhile, the rest of us just get a little medical quality smoke from a friend with a card and go about our lives.

I think Stupak's playing this to corrections officers
I'm more likely to vote for Benishek for that comment than before if I lived in this district. We've given up so many freedoms in the name of that war. A lot of people, including Republicans, think the War On Some Drugs is a failure, at least in its current form. Many more think the federal involvement, outside of borders, is ridiculous. Medical Marijuana passed easily in both conservative and liberal areas.

But there's a lot of cops in the 1st district, and a lot of corrections officers. The war on drugs keeps them employed. Stupak and McDowell need their votes, which are often swing votes in elections up there. (Luce, Mackinac, Ogemaw, Gladwin, Iosco Counties)
