Is anybody else getting anonymous robocalls about Snyder's pension tax?

by: louise the dog

Wed Mar 23, 2011 at 16:47:14 PM EDT

(I'm  busy this morning ... talk amongst yourselves. - promoted by Eric B.)

I was at home in Grand Rapids this afternoon when I got an anonymous robocall from Zeeland that said I should contact my State Senator Jansen and urge him to vote for the Governor's pension tax plan.

The actual wording was quite a bit different than that.  It was something like, "now some pensions are taxed and some are not and the Governor's plan would make it fairer for everybody"

Does anybody know what are the rules about identifying your organization for an issues call?

There appears to be... (0.00 / 0)
... a whole new crop of robo calls coming out. Lots of money in the post-Citizens United world. Welcome to the continuous 'campaign' (special interests NOT politicians, candidates and campaigns have little to no say on any of these, well not legally anyway).

No rules, no limits.

Time to pay the extra $3.50 per month to go unlisted (one has to pay extra to be unmolested on landlines).

Yes indeed- I got the same thing in Muskegon telling me to call Hansen. I did, but not with the message they wanted. I thought that it was curious that the call didn't identify who it was from.

How about having to disclose who is funding calls on the calls (4.00 / 2)
Some legislation please ?  Full dsclosure and transparency are certainy some buzzwords on the other side, it would nice to make them walk the walk

I'm not opposed to pension taxes in the abstract... (0.00 / 0)
It's the way Snyder's budget goes about it (taxing from the first dollar, with no exemptions), and the purpose for which the money is being used (to offset the massive corporate tax cuts -- without addressing the coming budget shortfall) that gets my dander up.

As Boomers retire (swelling the ranks of seniors each year), not taxing pensions at all will just become more and more of a drag on the state.

But for Frith's sake, DO IT RIGHT!

How is that a "drag" (0.00 / 0)
on the state? Those retirees will be replaced in the workforce, by taxpayers.

It's a benefit that rises in cost ever year (4.00 / 2)
Generation X and everyone after it is smaller by sheer number than the Boomers. So, you'll have smaller cohorts of wage earners supporting a much bigger generation of retirees. People I've interviewed in the health care industry, at least those involved on the finance side, say the same thing about health care ... for about 20 years, it's going to be very expensive because the biggest generation will be consuming the most services and paying in the least. It's not an inter-generational slam, it's just how things lay out.

No, but I have been getting robocalls (4.00 / 1)
...from some anti-EPA organization from Washington CD telling me to call Senator Levin and tell him I don't want the EPA making regulations that "kill" jobs.

I got the impression that this was from some utility-company PAC...

I'm amazed at how much propaganda there is out there, and the elections were over in November.  Snyder's backers are putting commercials out there trying to get everyone comfortable with the lies and deceptions of his budget proposals.  Why are they spending so much money trying to convince people that these things are 'good' for them?

Only one reason:  They AREN'T.

I got the same one (0.00 / 0)
If I remember correctly, it's from Clean Coal for Michigan or some such. The irony there is ridiculous.

Grand Rapids (4.00 / 1)
I read that some outfit out of Grand Rapids had been set up to shill for Snyder.  I think they are named "Value for Michigan" or some similar BS astroturf name.  But, yeah, it's based out of West Michigan.

This is... (0.00 / 0)
... Chuck Yob's kids Jon Yob and Patrick Yob.

Michigan Messenger is on it.

I got the call (0.00 / 0)
I called Joe Hune's office about it. He's well aware of the robocall push.

He's still opposed (as I am) to the Snyder budget proposal.

HAven't gotten a robocall yet (4.00 / 1)
But on a quasi-related subject: Anyone else see those ads opposing the job-creating DRIC project?

Great Lakes, Great Times, Great Scott

Yep (0.00 / 0)
They've been up for about a month or so and seem to be playing all over the state.  I've seen them here in Lansing.

Matty's company also announced, today, that he'd be putting new windows and a roof on the Michigan Central Station in Detroit.  This guy is so desperate.
