ICYMI: Hansen Clarke to run for Congress in John Conyers' district

by: Eric B.

Tue Aug 23, 2011 at 13:30:39 PM EDT

For some reason, I thought I first heard about this a couple of days ago.

LANSING, Mich. — U.S. Rep. John Conyers remained mum Monday on where he plans to run for re-election after another Democratic incumbent said he plans to run in Conyers' district.

Hansen Clarke, a 54-year-old congressional freshman, announced on his Facebook page Sunday that he's running in the redrawn 14th District, which snakes up through neighboring Oakland County to the county seat of Pontiac. Clarke spokesman Kim Bowman said Monday the 14th District includes more of the voters Clarke has represented in Congress or the Michigan Senate than the redrawn 13th District where Clarke now lives.

I guess I did. I guess I probably ought to also read snippeted paragraphs thoroughly before using them as blockquotes.

It is too bad
They are both good US Representatives. They have both signed onto glass-steagall and both voted against "satan's sandwhich." It is the same for Gary peters and Sander Levin. This is the price you pay for having such a poorly run Michigan Democratic Party that appears addicted to losing.

Huh?
What's too bad?  From my understanding, since their districts were basically geographically switched (with some huge changes to the new 14, though), it's been kind of a given that both would run in each others new districts, which are geographically their old ones.  I'd bet that they both retain these two seats pretty easily.  These two are Democratic districts regardless of how they are drawn given that both have to include each half of Detroit.  This really isn't a big deal; not sure why the media is trying to pretend that it is.

ok im not sure
If they are not running against each then im out of the loop. I thought the article implied they'd be running against each other. fill me in if you can. what about levin and peters. Is it one or the other or can they both keep a seat?

13 & 14
Conyers hasn't explicitly stated he's running in the new 13th, but it has been both assumed and implied, as it is geographically most of his old district.  My feeling is that Clarke did this to expediate Conyers decision on what to do next.  I think everyone was a bit surprised Clarke forced Conyers hand so early, but it wasn't totally expected.

Levin and Peters is an entirely different issue as their districts were actually combined.

Except for the vast swathes of Oakland County given to the 11th
Right now, Gary Peters represents more residents of the new 11th than Thaddeus "Look! I'm in Iowa, too!!" McCotter.
