A tale of two ads

You've probably seen (or at least heard about) these ads by now, but in case you haven't, click the links below (embedding won't seem to work):

Halftime in America

Debbie SpendItNow

One is a hopeful look at the spirit of Detroit and the spirit of America. The other has embroiled the controversy-prone Hoekstra in yet another bitter controversy.

Hoekstra (4.00 / 1)
I'm mostly offended that Pete Hoekstra believes that any asian looks Chinese.  That was clearly vietnam or at least South east asia, and so was the woman.  As if Michiganders aren't savvy enough to know the difference.

I'm not so sure they would up in Benishek's district, n/t (0.00 / 0)

"Spend it now?" (4.00 / 2)
Really?  Really!?  THAT'S Hoekstra's angle?  I've seen soreheads news web site commenters come up with better "clever" nicknames for politicians they don't like. That's PATHETIC!

He should have hired a bunch of middle school kids to write his ad. It would have turned out better.

I won't even get into the xenophobia.  Just. Don't.

Satirical? (4.00 / 2)
He says he's being "satirical" because the "Chinese" woman speaks English. This is supposedly a "dig" on the  American educational system and how much better the Asian education system is because an American kid speaking Mandarin would be "unthinkable."

Hang on.  Is he saying that he's in favor of American children learning Mandarin? Wouldn't it cost money to have classes in Mandarin?

Good grief!  Newt Gingrich doesn't want us to vote for Willard because Willard speaks FRENCH for God's sake! (source: http://youtu.be/tyFaWhygzjQ)  Now Hoekstra is making fun of us because we can't speak Mandarin?!

DEAR REPUBLICAN PARTY: MAKE UP YOUR MINDS!

Defining Yourself (4.00 / 4)
OneToughNerd used the Super Bowl to define himself (inaccurately) as a data-driven non-ideologue. The image stuck through the campaign and up to the point where he actually introduced his policies ... after he was elected.

Hoekstra has defined himself as a xenophobe who has the political sophistication of a 12-year-old (and I apologize in advance to 12-year-olds).

Given Sen. Stabenow's record of fighting against Chinese currency manipulation and in favor of opening up Asian markets to Michigan products, it is a strange way to start the Hoekstra campaign...except to remember that his problem right now is to win the nomination. He's using the Gingrich attack-and-burn approach to appeal to the Tea Party types who are pre-disposed to vote for someone even more extreme than Hoekstra.

Because we all know what we really need in the Senate is someone like Newt: a former congressman who cashes in on his public service by selling access and influence as a lobbyist or historian.

Great Point (4.00 / 2)
Given Sen. Stabenow's record of fighting against Chinese currency manipulation and in favor of opening up Asian markets to Michigan products, it is a strange way to start the Hoekstra campaign...

I think this is the most interesting point about the ad.  Put the blatant xenophobia aside for one second, and the ad is still a bold-faced lie on subtance.  Stabenow has been one of the most dogged senators, Democrat or Republican, on issues of trade and currency with China.  That they took this angle just seems bizarre.

These Ads (0.00 / 0)
I remember these advertising signs and I still can't believe that these were from those people. I think these ads are racists.
