Tea Party so nutty they're going after Tim Walberg

by: Eric B.

Fri Mar 09, 2012 at 15:40:29 PM EST

This isn't just a little crazy, this is batshit crazy.

“You have a lot of people always going for the Hail Mary, I want to cut the deficit now. Others of us see that we’re moving the football down the field,” said Scott Hagerstrom, a Tea Party activist in Michigan, where at least two Republican lawmakers, Fred Upton and Tim Walberg, face primary challenges.

The Walberg, Gibbs and Bilbray races are listed as competitive by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, which considers Schmidt and Fleischmann’s districts to be solid Republican.

For the record, I don't think the Tea Party challenger has a chance in hell of beating Tim Walberg. I don't much pay attention to those scorecard things that people tend to take very seriously, but I can't imagine he's actually at the top of anyone's list to primary out of office for not being nuts enough.

By the way, someone noted in comments below that there is now a Democratic challenger in the 7th Distrit. Here's a link to his Facebook page. It's not quite the splash announcement we were told would be forthcoming, so maybe he's not the only person considering a run. Or, maybe he's the only person who said he'd run and there was never going to be a splash announcement. Or, perhaps there's a former Detroit Red Wings player who might jump in.

There's nothing better
for Democrats than a Republican circular firing squad. Walberg is easily one of the dumbest and most far right guys in the MI delegation, so he should be their guy all the way.

But he's not enough of a lunatic?

This is great news. I hope to see these clowns tear each other to shreds while alienating any and all sane voters.

I'm fully for chaos on their side, but if we're to be honest with ourselves, people get primaries all the time by perenial candidates to no avail.  The real question is whether the primary challenger has money.  In this case, some Potterville (a tiny, Eaton County community of a little over 2,000) city council member is challenging him, and I'd be surprised if the guy gets in the double digits.

I've kind of whined about it, before, but this seat should be so easy to contest for Dems.  Even as rural as the district is (both before and after redistricting), it is far more competitive than other rural districts in the state, and I can't believe local Dems can't dig up some Jackson County politician to give this a shot.
