America's shoutiest mayor starts making case to switch Lansing to a city manager form of government

Here in Mt. Pleasant, we apparently have a very sterile, almost inhuman way of telling people to fucking clean up their yards. Exhibit A, to the left, a bright orange notice left on the front door of our good friend Alyssa B. this afternoon while she was at work. I should add, lest I be shivved in the middle of the night, that the notice was left on all the building's doors and has everything to do with the pile of junk in the backyard left when the landlord tossed out some deadbeat tenants a month and a half ago (I advised her to ignore the notice and instead go to the store and pick up some beer). Lest you think the rest of the state suffers the cold, antiseptic sting of the impersonal orange notice.

LANSING -- The police chief made a personal visit to the brother of the mayor's chief political rival to tell him to clean up shrubs, according to multiple sources.

Lansing Police Chief Theresa Szymanski confirmed Friday that she visited the home of Chuck Hallman to deal with a complaint about some branches on property adjacent to his.

For the money is probably cost the police chief to take the time out of her day and run this errand herself, they probably could have hired our local code enforcement guy to drive the hour from Mt. Pleasant and tape to this guy's door an orange notice. If local custom dictates, he might have even stopped and purchased himself a black Sharpie on the way down to block out the part identifying clear and understandable sanctions if the branches weren't cleaned up. But, we can understand ... Lansing is now flush with police millage money and it's such a privilege for its police chief to serve that she can go visit everyone with a branch problem.

By the way, did I mention -- as is in the story -- that the property in question is owned by the lady who challenged Bernero for mayor in 2009, Lansing's poet laureate Carol Wood? On the other hand, there's something so "corrupt Southern politician" about this that it suggests that maybe Virg is just getting a head start on that whole transforming of Michigan into the Mississippi of the North thing.

For all of you keeping score at home: We've been missing some crucial developments the last two weeks related to Virg and his unionized police officers. When the month runs out, don't start bitching up a storm when he shows up on April's Most Odious month. As mentioned in the headline, it's stuff like this that practically scream out for a town to drop the strong mayor form of government and hire a city manager.
