Dems rally around write-in in Grand Rapids

by: Eric B.

You've seen this already. We note it here officially.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - There's a new democratic candidate challenging Roy Schmidt in the state House. Friday morning, local democrats introduced Winnie Brinks as the write-in democratic candidate for the 76th District.

Yup.

Qualifications
Brinks is pretty solid in a number of areas.

First, her present work is with The Source, an NGO funded by local companies and focused on workforce development.

Second, her involvement has been with the political committee of the EGR PTA. Don't let "PTA" fool you, this is a very well connected group, financially and politically. More important, it highlights the role of education.

Third, outsiders (heck, insiders too) will miss the significance of a woman candidate. In the newly refashioned 76th, the fulcrum will be the Second Ward, a largely suburban and soft Catholic leaning area. More importantly, that Ward has reliably sent women to serve on the City Commission for a generation.

Fourth, yes, she's Dutch (and married to missionary kid), met at Calvin College. In the SE side, this will add to credibility / familiarity.

Oh, and last: "Winnie Brinks" is phonetic and so easy to write-in.

And:
She has integrity.

Which distinguishes her from.... you know who.
