22 points, alright

by: Eric B.

Sun Jun 24, 2012 at 13:52:30 PM EDT

The third fund-raising e-mail sent out by Trevor Thomas' campaign this weekend that seeks to mislead Democratic voters into donating money based on the results of a poll that mislead Democratic voters on his opponent's positions. From Ye Olde Inbox:

As we talked just before the meeting, Trevor said he hoped we would not be down by too much... or maybe that we'd be up by a couple of points. These results - with Trevor up by 22 points once our message is out there - are far better than we imagined.

But those numbers only become real if you - and others - give now. ...

The results aren't at all better than what Trevor imagined. In fact, since his own poll shows him down as things now stand, they're exactly what his imagined. And, then he turned around and attempted to peddle this figment of his campaign's imagination as reality to potential donors while asking them for money.

I don't know what moves the needle in that part of the state, but telling untruths to people while trying to convince them to open their wallets to your campaign doesn't strike me as the sort of strategy likely to be a winning one in the long term.

We get it, Eric.
You've thrown your lot in with a cranky old fart who has lots of local cronies, zero ideas and zero electability. Really, we get it. Stop trashing Trevor.

Since when is pointing out untruth "trashing someone"
1. I don't "throw my lot in" with campaigns. If I did that, I'd be passing along fund-raising e-mails from that campaign and announcing campaign events. That's what "throwing my lot in" looks like.

2. It's not "throwing my lot in" to point out that someone's campaign narrative is, in fact, deceptive; and that they're using that campaign narrative to send out deceptive fund-raising solicitation e-mails.  That's the entire point of "the media."  Trevor Thomas is running a highly dishonest campaign, and is using that dishonest campaign to send out deceptive fund-raising e-mails.

Zero electability?
I want to give Trevor as much room as possible for his  campaign but to date, his electability prospects are dim indeed. It's not a question of identity, nor even of the ham handed attacks, what's missing to date in the campaign is the evidence that he has any real sense as to how to build an effective coalition.

This is the insurgent's trap: to go after the status quo but to do so knowing that you have to pick them up in order to win in November. The easy path is that of the negative. This is a strategic mistake. Trevor's path has always been to establish himself first as a champion, then use the contrast to push the decision.

That affirmative case could have been made as young v. "cranky old fart"; it could also have been done by championing the men and women in our service; it could have been done by a Michigan boy come home. Lots of happy narratives out there.

But let's finally face it, the reason for the high temperature fund-raising (and boy, has it raised the temps of some) is that the Thomas campaign lacks funds. Going in, he needed a clear path to raising the million plus needed for the general. He's done a credible job, but mostly from outside the district. Lack of funds is not so much a sign of failure as of youth. Cranky old farts and cronies generally have developed the fund raising a little bit more.

This is what I posted about the other day
no one is giving reasons why Trevor Thomas is the BETTER Dem to elect to take down Amash.  The Trevor supporters I know just seem to bash Pestka, who, as far as I can tell, has a better profile for the district, better name rec and better funding, important in a year when the DCCC will likely focus on other races in our state.

Do I wish we could ONLY elect Dems who have always been Pro-Choice and supportive of all the things I support?  Sure.  But the reality is that Dems have to have a big tent to win majorities in both the State and Federal Houses.  Pestka is a familiar name to voters in an important part of the 3rd district, and his moderate Dem profile won't automatically scare off independents in the farm/churchland parts of the 3rd.

I'm happy that people are excited about either of the candidates who will be up against Justin Amash, because he is truly heinous.  But I'm only seeing aggressive negativity and attacks (not just on Pestka but on anyone who dares support him) from the Trevor side and it is off-putting.

Stop trashing Trevor?
Gimme a break.  Trevor has done nothing but trash Pestka from day one.  Even you, PerfectStormer, can't go after Pestka without name calling. What is it with you people?

It'd be funny...
...to see folks losing their shit over a district we're not going to win, anyway, and especially with this petty in-fighting, if it weren't so sad.

I haven't posted my opinion on this race until now, but my opinion of these types of races is that when you go down, you go down on principle.  The last Dem to run for this seat moved so far to the right, that he was probably running to the right of some Republicans on the east side of the state...and still lost by 22 effin' points.  This district has only been marginally made more favorable to Dems; keep trying to run establishment conservadems in a red district and continue to see where it gets you.  Conservatives are stupid; they're not that stupid.

Where is the sense of principle?
Trevor Thomas isn't running on principle. He's running on that he can win. What he hasn't done is give anyone an idea of how he plans to do that, or even what principled positions he plans to take. It appears that he's running on the idea that he is who the individual voter wants him to be at the moment ... if they want an openly gay man, he's an openly gay man; if they want a devout Catholic, he's a devout Catholic; if they want a supporter of the private sector, well, he's going to do that; if they want a pitpull for labor, he'll do that. If you're going to run an insurgency campaign, you ought to have some sort of message for why.

Keep in mind that I really have no opinion on this race.  They're giving me money for sponsorship space, and my friend works for it. But, I've never met Steve Pestka, it's not my district, and it's not even my part of the state.  There are other races that for the general are more interesting to me. And, as you noted, the chances of taking this seat from a Republican are pretty slim.
