Roger Kahn's possible Senate candidacy: Sacrifical lamb, or just evidence of a thin bench?

by: Eric B.

Thu Jun 28, 2012 at 09:29:32 AM EDT

The phrase, "Out of his depth" comes to mind.

LANSING -- A Republican state senator said Tuesday he is considering a 2014 challenge to U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, a Detroit Democrat.

Sen. Roger Kahn, R-Saginaw Township, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, confirmed his interest in the race in an interview with the Free Press after attending Gov. Rick Snyder's signing ceremony for the 2013 state budget.

This is what you get with term limits, people whose aspirations far outstrip their abilities. Also, I can't imagine that a hair-trigger temper and Santa Claus-like body shape is a healthy combination.

I would support that
to see all of Kahn's dirty laundry dragged out for public viewing until he slinks back into obscurity.

I have no desire to see Roger Kahn's laundry, clean or dirty
Especially the knickers.

Amash
Sorry for my long absence from ML-work down in the Lone Star State is keeping me busy.

If Raging Roger decides to run, he's certainly be facing a battle against Justin Amash. I'm not saying that Amash in going to win reelection in 2012. However, if he does, he certainly is going to run for Senate in 2014. I think you could see another interesting primary battle between different conservative factions of the GOP, but I'd put my money on Amash winning against Kahn. We'll see who else runs.

The problem for us is if Levin retires. Our bench is somewhat deeper, and I'd really make a push for Whitmer to run (if she isn't running for Gov or AG already), although that would get in the way of my dream 2014 ticket of Schuaer for Gov, Jimmy Womack for Lt. Gov, Benson for SOS, and Whitmer for AG. Perhaps Kildee (although he would have been in Congress for just one term) could also run for the Senate seat.

Whitmer...
I think she has aspirations beyond AG next time around.  Personally, I'd like to see her in D.C.
