Wiping clean your own history

Got an e-mail this morning about one of the candidates running for the Democratic nomination in the 11th House District. Listen, the e-mail said, to Joe D.'s spot this morning on Tony T.'s show. Joe D. discussed the candidacy of one Cody Bailey. At some point, I received via e-mail some opposition research on Bailey.

Interesting reading. Seems that right up to very recent history that Bailey was a die-hard Republican, and that his Facebook choices show a lot of support for GOP candidates and conservative causes ... right up to a very recent period of time, when he apparently saw the light and became a Democrat.

Youth being what it is, I suppose a fairly rapid conversion in politics if possible. At some point, his dad hailed his shift, and then said he knows his kid says he hates all political parties. If you read the stuff he once posted to Facebook, he also dislikes unions.

Never met the guy and it ain't my district, so I'm not about to lay judgments on whether the conversion is a genuine evolution or, as alleged, shameless opportunism.  I will say that this reflects a profound danger in electing very young candidates. They don't have a body of life experience built up, and this Bailey kid apparently just graduated from Albion College, to be able to figure out who's playing them and even whether the positions they take a giant con jobs foisted off by someone else. In other words, you can't trust them, not because young people are inherently untrustworthy, but because they tend to be gullible. This is especially true if their personal history is filled with inflammatory statements about unions and support for Republican candidates. I mean, the kid apparently did an internship with the Romney folks.

Come Monday, Dave Knezak, the other Democrat running in the district, will be on Tony T.'s show with Harvey Santana.

A couple things
1. Notice Bailey's Facebook page talks about 'job creators' (Republicans are embracing that framing like crazy right now) while complaining about regulation. Whether you're a real Democrat using Republican framing or a Republican trying to hide it, you're doing it wrong, Cody.

2. For what it's worth, Knezek will turn 26 just after the primary. So combined, the two are younger than a lot of current lawmakers.

3. There is no danger in electing young candidates. There is a danger in not electing young candidates - at least having a few young people in elected office. Particularly in legislative bodies, we need the young, young-at-heart, black, white, Latino, Asian, Arab, GLBT, straight, male, and female. When young people decide to get involved in politics, they should be treated with respect, not derision.

I have been involved in two county Parties in recent years. In each county, a young Democratic candidate is running for office in a Republican-held seat which could turn blue.

In one county, local Democrats have embraced the young candidate, offering to help him in any way they can, hosting fundraisers, and even helping to train his volunteers.

The other county party? The other young Democratic candidate? Nope. After he stuck his neck out to run for office in February - just three months before the filing deadline - the Democratic establishment went into overtime to recruit another candidate. Then they tried to get the young candidate out of the race, complaining that a primary was somehow going to hurt Democrats' chances of winning the seat. (Never mind (1) the contested primary the Republican incumbent faced just to get the seat, (2) the contested and often divisive primaries Obama and Snyder each faced before being elected to much higher office, and (3) the fact that they recruited this candidate after the younger candidate got in).

When it was clear that the younger candidate wasn't going to budge, several establishment figures (including a couple elected officials) began to slander him, calling him a carpetbagger, etc. When he spoke at a local party meeting, somebody planted "gotcha" questions meant to embarrass him and/or knock him off his game.

You might be thinking, "Oh, but ScottyUrb, that's just politics!" Except the establishment candidate himself has said repeatedly that we need to stay positive, not attack fellow Democrats, etc. So why is it okay for people to attack a young candidate for office?

In both of these cases, Republicans hold the seats but Democrats could win them this year. In both of those cases, young Republican incumbents are running for re-election. In both of these cases, young Democratic candidates stuck their heads out before anyone else did. But the differences between the way the young candidates are treated speaks volumes.
