Why newspaper endorsements are so worthless

by: Eric B.

The Freep, on Sunday.

The better choice is former state Sen. NANCY CASSIS, who is running an organized, funded write-in campaign. Cassis is a Republican foot soldier, and is given to simplistic and jargonny policy positions. She wants to reduce every department's budget by 10%, and says she would not support any federal health care reform plan.

But she was a competent state senator and, given the alternative, is the best choice for voters.

By competent, what they mean is that she showed up for work regularly and without drooling on herself during votes. As for the rest of it, we allude to the preceding paragraph in which the Freep describes her as clingy to doctrine to the point of simple-mindedness.

Know what would have been a real service to the paper's readers? Endorsing no one on the grounds that the policy position taken by the consensus Establishment choice was a key component to political gridlock in Lansing during her tenure, and her single-minded devotion to repealing the film industry credits (and throwing people out of work) for the sole reason of wanting to embarrass a sitting Democrat.

At some point, if you're not willing to say, "These people are all worthless, and the fact that voters in this district lack other choices raises the question as to whether democracy is a failed experiment," you're not really doing anyone any good.

At least the Detroit Regional Chamber was more honest
In an article I wrote for Examiner.com, Detroit Regional Chamber endorses Stabenow and State House candidates, I pointed out the following.
The Detroit Regional Chamber PAC was unable to reach consensus on which candidate, Clark Durant and Pete Hoekstra, to endorse for the Republican nomination for Stabenow's Senate seat.  Despite its indecision, the PAC praised both candidates, calling them "capable and qualified."
And they're not even journalists!

Regarding the Freep's endorsement of Cassis
As I wrote in Brainwrap's diary, it's not like the Republican primary electorate would accept a verdict of "neither of the above."

They wouldn't care
Nobody really cares about newspaper endorsements, except newspaper editorial writers and candidates. Most of the Republican primary electorate gets its news from something else, anyway, primarily Fox News and rightwing blogs.  So, it wouldn't have noticed, wouldn't have cared.

This
The Free Press has fallen so far.  I happened to have read the endorsements, and they did something similar with their John Conyers endorsement.  Stephen Henderson's addendum just drove home to me that this isn't a serious paper, anymore.  They've gone soft with their false equivalencies instead of giving their real opinion.  You think the News holds back how they feel?

Like you said, how about simply not endorsing anyone in that race?  I noticed that they did do this on one of the lesser races, but only because the candidates didn't send back their questionaire to the paper.  Since these things don't really matter in terms of changing minds, what they are valuable for is giving us a peak into the soul of a newspaper, and in this case, the Free Press is as hollow as it's been.

Didja happen to see the Oakland Press' endorsement of Peters?
The Peters endorsement itself is unusually strong, but this isn't surprising because the OP openly admits that the new 14th is a virtual lock for the Dems anyway, so they might as well go with the most center-leaning Democrat of the bunch. Plus, he lives in Bloomfield Hills, so there's the home town boy factor.

However, take a look at the final paragraph for the real stunner:

Meanwhile, voters should consider the monstrous shape of the district when they weigh the candidacies of those incumbent Republicans running for re-election to the Michigan House of Representatives. All of those from Oakland County supported creation of the 14th district, poorly serving their constituents.

Wow. The Oakland Press just outright slammed the entire state Republican Party for the absurd gerrymandering. They must be really pissed about the county getting sliced up to turn on the GOP...
