| The Freep, on Sunday. The better choice is former state Sen. NANCY CASSIS, who is running an organized, funded write-in campaign. Cassis is a Republican foot soldier, and is given to simplistic and jargonny policy positions. She wants to reduce every department's budget by 10%, and says she would not support any federal health care reform plan. But she was a competent state senator and, given the alternative, is the best choice for voters.
By competent, what they mean is that she showed up for work regularly and without drooling on herself during votes. As for the rest of it, we allude to the preceding paragraph in which the Freep describes her as clingy to doctrine to the point of simple-mindedness. Know what would have been a real service to the paper's readers? Endorsing no one on the grounds that the policy position taken by the consensus Establishment choice was a key component to political gridlock in Lansing during her tenure, and her single-minded devotion to repealing the film industry credits (and throwing people out of work) for the sole reason of wanting to embarrass a sitting Democrat. At some point, if you're not willing to say, "These people are all worthless, and the fact that voters in this district lack other choices raises the question as to whether democracy is a failed experiment," you're not really doing anyone any good. |
