Nancy Cassis, stateswoman

I have to be honest and say that I've been a little surprised by the reaction of the media to the possibility that Mark Brewer and Bobby Shostak would hatch some scheme to get rid of the primary for the 11th Congressional District to save money. I mean, I get the facts of the thing -- it's money most of those communities can't afford to spend on an election the results of which will ultimately only apply for a couple of weeks -- but it seems like an awfully dangerous precedent to set, getting rid of Constitutionally mandated elections because they're too much bother. If money is the issue, where is the retroactive complaining about this year's Republican presidential primary, which cost taxpayers of the state $10 million and which is something that the GOP could have handled at its own expense with a caucus. This is especially the case on the Republican side, where there are at least two competing philosophies (one nutty, the other nuttier) to choose from.

That said, I give you the Free Press-endorsed candidate in the 11th Congressional District, upon the occasion of every community there having to foot the bill for a primary election that will lead to the naming of a candidate who might serve for two weeks.

"I deeply regret the cost, confusion and extra burden on the local clerks which will occur due to the Special Election the Governor has called," said Cassis, who is running as a write-in candidate on the Aug. 7 primary ballot, in a written statement. "But we cannot allow this seat to be represented by a Democrat who supports ObamaCare, or a Republican who believes President Bush and Vice President Cheney were responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attack on America."

Translation: My two weeks of service will absolutely be worth every penny of that $650,000. Keep in mind the Freep's endorsement of her was based on her competence as a state senator. Competent lawmakers would take care to spare their districts an otherwise-useless expense of more than half a million dollars. Egomaniacs say they hate to see that money spent (on something other than public safety, or local road projects), but say that the cost is a regrettably necessary to obtain their representation.

She'll have no problem winning the special
Brewer dredged up an aging white nebbish from the UAW broom closet as the Democrats' anointed candidate. I have no intention of voting for the guy in the primary; I'll either write in Ndamukong Suh or vote on the Republican side for the worst wingnut in the field.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

David Curson goes straight through to November, so you don't have to worry about it until then
On November 6, that's when you'll have to decide which is greater:

Your disgust for a lifelong UAW member -- whose marching orders consist of six words: "Vote Democratic and Don't Embarrass Us;" or

The need to prevent the Incompetent Nancy Cassis or the Tea Party Crazy Kerry Bentivolio from representing us during what's likely to be a very important "lame duck" session.

P.S. For anyone else considering simply letting the GOP finish out Thad's term, on the argument that "It's just one House vote for only a few weeks; what harm can Bentivolio or Cassis do?" I have three words for you:

Shelley.
Sekula.
Gibbs.

Snyder could have refused to call the election.
There was no real downside to refusing to simply refusing to call the special election.  If Snyder had simply announced that there wasn't sufficient time, I imagine that none of the potential candidates would have sued.  If any of them had filed for a writ of mandamus, there would have been a pretty good defense, since we now see that this election doesn't quite meet the time limits in Federal law anyway.

The duty to call a special election isn't absolute;  it assumes the calendar permits.  If the vacancy occurred in (say) August, I'm pretty sure no court would even consider ordering the Governor to call one.

The stupidest thing about this election is that it doesn't benefit ANYBODY.  Winning the special primary won't help Cassis to win the write-in contest held the same day.  It doesn't benefit the Democrats.  It doesn't assist the Santa's Helper.  The voters couldn't care less.

In short, Snyder should have gone with Nancy Reagan, rather than Nike:  "Just say no!", rather than "Just do it."

What if calling the Special was all Brian Calley?
Here's what we know:

Gov. Snyder was out of the country, and Calley was Acting Governor.
Calley acted very quickly -- within 24 hours of Thad's resignation, the special election dates had already been set.
Calley is far more partisan than Snyder, and still has close ties to the Legislature from which he came.
Calley personally signed several bills that could easily have waited until Snyder's return.

Given all that, is there a chance the Lt. Gov. got ahead of his boss, before all the legal ramifications had been considered and the true costs calculated?

Once the die had been cast, Snyder really had no choice but to support the decision as if it was his.

Plausible.
My take on this is that nobody is better off for holding the stupid election, and that killing it would have been the right thing not because it benefited somebody with clout, but because it would have benefited EVERYBODY.

I'm sure there's a particular person who thought he/she would come out ahead somehow, who lobbied for it.  And I'm pretty sure that in the end, even that person will discover the whole thing is a waste.
